Excerpt from Opportunities for Timber Production in Hawaii The difficulty and expense involved in clearing away dense jungle so that valuable timber species can be planted have been a third major drawback to forest industrial development in Hawaii. The forest lands of the State generally lie in the heavy rain belt on mountainsides above the settlements. Soils, though productive for timber are often almost unbelievably rocky. Jungle vegetation is dense and difficult to clear. Wet, swampy conditions are common on the more level sites. Heavy crawler-type tractors with bulldozers and other specialized equip ment suitable to operate effectively under these difficult conditions have not been available very long-20 to 25 years at most. Landowners and public agencies only recently have started fairly large-scale land clearing operations with mechanized equipment to convert the jungle into residential areas, improved pastures, and forests. Species trials have been conducted in Hawaii since the 1870's. Many species have been successfully established and harvested, whereas native species have failed in numerous reforestation projects. Since the early 1960's silviculture research concentrated on developing methodology for establishing and developing forest stands for timber production.

Excerpt from Wood Quality Studies to Guide Hawaiian Forest Industries For many years before Statehood, the Bishop Estate and later the Territorial Board of Commissioners of Agriculture and Forestry of Hawaii conducted a cooperative program of timber testing at the U. S. Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory at Madison, Wisconsin. In 1959, it became apparent that the time had come to reexamine this program and set a course for future wood quality studies. The Board asked the Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station to take on the job, and the Legislature provided most of the necessary financing. This report is the outcome. It represents one of a series of forest research projects which were started under the old Board and which are now being continued cooperatively by the new Department of Agriculture and Conservation and the Forest Service. Excerpt from The Forests of the Hawaiian Islands On the island of Oahu the algaroba forest, covering densely about acres, extends in a narrow, almost continuous belt along the south and west coasts. In this situation it is fully protected from the northeast trade winds, which blow with great regularity from March to November - exposure to which it can not endure. The young trees are now growing in great numbers as high as feet above the sea. It is supposed by some people that algaroba is able to grow at this eleva tion only by gradual adaptation. Starting at sea level, the trees were at first acclimated Only to an elevation of a few hundred feet, but successive generations growing higher and higher up the slopes have at last produced trees which are able to grow at the altitude named. Indeed, since the trees now found at feet are all young and thrifty, it seems probable that they will extend much farther up the mountain slopes than they have yet done. On the other islands the algaroba occupies the same relative position, reaching up the dry slopes to an elevation of several hundred feet. The land which it has taken possession of is usually so stony, arid, and precipitous as to be utterly worthless for other purposes. There fore the advent of this tree is generally welcomed by the landowner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
