Synopsis Of The Fishes Of North America written by David Starr Jordan and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1883 with Fishes categories.

This memoir attempts to give concise descriptions of all the fish species known to inhabit the waters of North America, north of the boundary between the United States and Mexico. The classification system adopted is essentially based on the views of Professors Gill and Cope rather than the fish groupings offered by the European systematists, with an effort to avoid unnatural associations in genera and families on one hand and subdivision beyond reasonable limits, on the other. Genera which have defied precise definition are rarely adopted.

The very first work of fiction by the best-selling, acclaimed author of City on Fire--his piercingly beautiful treasure box of a novella about two families in the suburbs, now in a newly designed full-color edition For years, the Hungates and the Harrisons have coexisted peacefully in the same Long Island neighborhood, enjoying the pleasures and weathering the pitfalls of their suburban habitat. But when the patriarch of one family dies unexpectedly, the survivors face a stark imperative: adapt or face extinction. In sixty-three interlinked vignettes and striking accompanying photographs, the novella cuts multiple paths--which can be reconstructed in any order--through the lives of its richly imagined characters. Part art object, part Choose Your Own Adventure, A Field Guide to the North American Family is an innovative and deeply personal look at the ties that bind, as well as a poignant meditation on connection in a fragmented world.

Atlas of the Indian Tribes of the Continental United States and the Clash of Cultures The Atlas identifies of the Native American tribes of the United States and chronicles the conflict of cultures and Indians' fight for self-preservation in a changing and demanding new word. The Atlas is a compact resource on the identity, location, and history of each of the Native American tribes that have inhabited the land that we now call the continental United States and answers the three basic questions of who, where, and when. Regretfully, the information on too many tribes is extremely limited. For some, there is little more than a name. The history of the American Indian is presented in the context of America's history its westward expansion, official government policy and public attitudes. By seeing something of who we were, we are better prepared to define who we need to be. The Atlas will be a convenient resource for the casual reader, the researcher, and the teacher and the student alike. A unique feature of this book is a master list of the varied names by which the tribes have been known throughout history.

Matecumbe written by James A Michener and has been published by University Press of Florida this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-09-09 with Fiction categories.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author James A. Michener was in his sixties when he began traveling frequently to the Florida Keys. One result of those visits was the novel Matecumbe, named after two of the islands that comprise the town of Islamorada, located approximately half way between Miami and Key West. Never before published, Matecumbe features many of the hallmarks of Michener's best work, including detailed descriptions of place. However, the plot is much more intimate than that found in most of his large-scale, epic historical novels. Focusing on the parallel lives of a woman and her mother, both divorced, Michener spent his creative energy on character development and allegorical storytelling. Random House, his publisher, wasn't pleased, and wanted the mega-best-selling author to concentrate on producing "heavyweight" books like Hawaii and Centennial. Matecumbe seemed too much in the vein of his earlier romance novel, Sayonara. So it sat in a drawer until, eventually, Michener gifted it--including the copyright--to Joe Avenick, his friend and former ghostwriter. Avenick played a key role in the research and writing of Sports in America and Chesapeake, and introduced Michener to Melissa (Missy) DeMaio, who soon became the primary reason for Michener's increasingly frequent visits to the Keys. Biographers and critics have long agreed that Michener's personality and his characters were both affected by his relationship with DeMaio. As perhaps his most encompassing autobiographical novel, and the one written in the midst of these changes, Matecumbe provides what may be tantalizing glimpses into Michener's life.

Every Falling Star written by Sungju Lee and has been published by Abrams this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-13 with Young Adult Nonfiction categories.

Written for a young audience, this intense memoir explores the harsh realities of life on the streets in contemporary North Korea. Every Falling Star is the memoir of Sungju Lee, who at the age of twelve was forced to live on the streets of North Korea and fend for himself. To survive, Sungju creates a gang and lives by thieving, fighting, begging, and stealing rides on cargo trains. Sungju richly recreates his scabrous story, depicting what it was like for a boy alone to create a new family with his gang, “his brothers,” to daily be hungry and to fear arrest, imprisonment, and even execution. This riveting memoir allows young readers to learn about other cultures where freedoms they take for granted do not exist.
