Living the Christian life is a constant battle between good and evil. This book discusses these conflicts in terms of the yoke each of us carries through life. The yoke presented to us by Satan holds a beauty of sorts, which causes our hearts and minds to glance in different directions--directions which can send us into a spin of disaster for ourselves and those around us. On the other hand, Jesus Christ has a yoke perfectly fitted for us. It is a yoke designed to withstand the tribulations and leads us into righteousness according to the design in which God has divinely orchestrated. One yoke brings with its pleasures, the curse of death. When we plow with it, all we leave behind is the stench of dying relationships and our own decay. The yoke of Christ brings pleasure to the soul and a call to servant-hood. It enables us to plow ground that will grow and produce good fruit, blessings of peaceable relations with others and God. Rod Landreth has been a born again Christian since 1975. Since that time, he has had the opportunity to witness the rise and the fall of many, including himself. These rises and falls came by choices made from what appeared to be sweet intentions from the "evil one," but always to no avail--bringing much bitterness to the soul. Ordained in 1997, he is currently the pastor of Church of the Living Word, in West Point, CA. His heart is set on revealing how quick and easy it is for even the most seasoned Christians to be caught within the guile of Satan, calling evil good and good evil.

Excerpt from The Yoke Angelica laughed a little; not bitterly; rather in sheer amusement at the incongruous association of terms. She was seated at her dressing-table, sipping tea and looking through her letters, clad in a becoming dressing-gown of soft blue nun's veiling. A life without God. For Barnabas Mitchell, life had always been a struggle. From his father's abandonment to his mother's untimely death, Barnabas had lost his faith in God and in people. Determined to fulfill his potential, Barnabas continued on out of respect for his deceased mother, grinding through his days feeling unloved and unneeded. Then Bill Cushman entered his life. Tall, good-looking, athletic, and from an influential family, Bill was accustomed to getting his way in life. Making use of people was natural to Bill, and he immediately latched onto Barnabas, demanding his friendship and submission. Wherever Barnabas went, Bill would unexpectedly appear. No matter how hard he tried, Barnabas could not seem to shake Bill. Barnabas encountered Stephanie Schultz while attending law school. She was the type of person he had always wanted in his life. Pretty, smart, strong, and a believer, Stephanie admired Barnabas; but she knew he was struggling with his faith. She was determined to help Barnabas reclaim his faith, even as he knew that his beliefs were a wall between them. As a lawyer, Barnabas quickly earned the respect of his peers. When the biggest case of his career pits him against Bill Cushman, Barnabas must figure out a way to save his clients from Bill's underhanded attempts to steal their most prized asset. In the process, Barnabas is forced to decide whether he will reclaim his faith. The Yoke is a compelling journey of faith, love, forgiveness, and redemption. It is a must-read for anyone searching for meaning, faith, and spiritual focus in their life.

When the day declined he climbed down the front of the hill and crossed the narrow field toward his boat, which was buried in the rank vegetation of the water's edge. At the Nile he noted, a little distance up the river, a familiar figure among the reeds. For a moment he hesitated and then rambled through the riotous growth in that direction. As he drew near, Rachel raised herself from a search in a thicket of herbs, her arms full of them and her face a little flushed. "Idler!" said Kenkenes. "Nay," she answered with a smile, "I am at work--learned work." "Gathering witch-weeds for an incantation, sorceress?" "Not so. I am hunting herbs to make simples for the sick." "Of a truth? Then never before now have I craved for an illness that I might select my leech." -from "Chapter XIV: The Margin of the Nile" "A romance of the days when the Lord redeemed the children of Israel from the bondage of Egypt," this 1904 novel is a beautifully written adaptation of one of the most beloved Biblical tales. Kings and courtiers, priests and healers, lovers and warriors, the men and women of Miller's prose spring to life, marvelously realized, in a lost world captured as deftly as if the author had herself visited the ancient shores of the Nile. A splendid tale of people standing at the precipice of the future, caught between the old gods and the new dominion of Yahweh, The Yoke will delight readers of historical fiction. American author ELIZABETH MILLER (1878-1961) also wrote Saul of Tarsus: A Tale of the Early Christians (1906), The City of Delight: A Love Drama of the Siege and Fall of Jerusalem (1908), Daybreak: A Story of the Age of Discovery (1915).

Lachlan Kennedy removed his coat and settled into his seat. The train west would soon be leaving. He closed his eyes in silent prayer, dwelling on his favorite verse: "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest unto your soul. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." He found the words to be true. The best decision of his life was to slip under the yoke of salvation. His burdens had been many, but God always provided rest. Life had dealt him yet another blow. He had plowed through, weathering the storm, and now he was seeking that promised rest in the home of his longtime friend in the Dakota Territory. Sitting just five seats away was Lachlan's next battle. The three unsuspecting Westgate girls were headed to the same place. They too were seeking rest and a new beginning. Jamie Westgate was finally able to break away from a past dominated by men. The teaching job out west was her ticket to freedom, and she was dragging her late husband's cousin Cathleen and her daughter Amelia with her. When a sudden confrontation on the train takes Lachlan by surprise, his response leaves the trio in a whirlwind of emotion. One detested him, one admired him, and one loved him with all her heart. Can the four reside in the same place and find the rest they need?

Black women are strong. At least that's what everyone says and how they are constantly depicted. But what, exactly, does this strength entail? And what price do Black women pay for it? In this book, the author, a psychologist and pastoral theologian, examines the burdensome yoke that the ideology of the Strong Black Woman places upon African American women. She demonstrates how the three core features of the ideology--emotional strength, caregiving, and independence--constrain the lives of African American women and predispose them to physical and emotional health problems, including obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and anxiety. She traces the historical, social, and theological influences that resulted in the evolution and maintenance of the Strong Black Woman, including the Christian church, R & B and hip-hop artists, and popular television and film. Drawing upon womanist pastoral theology and twelve-step philosophy, she calls upon pastoral caregivers to aid in the healing of African American women's identities and crafts a twelve-step program for Strong Black Women in recovery.
