Excerpt from The Life and Character of Abraham Lincoln: An Address Delivered at the Hall of the Normal University, Normal, Ill., April 19, 1865 F our four items, the Edwards sermon is one of the scarcest. We can find no record of any copy sold, before the Burton sale of 1915 (where it brought and it is on the want list of leading collectors. The poem by Hon. B. B. French is also scarce, only seventy five copies having been printed. We have added Punch's tribute to Mr. Lincoln, as particularly appropriate. The Prayer of the Presidents is a scarce and also a peculiar item. Its author is given as F. S. Abiff, but the real name, as a Boston correspondent informs us, is unknown. The Holt address, to our mind, is one of the most interesting Lincoln items to be found. It is the only solution ever given to the mystery heretofore attaching to Lincoln's famous optical illusion of 1860. Excerpt from Memorial Address on the Life and Character of Abraham Lincoln: Delivered at Concord, New Hampshire, June 1, 1865, at the Request of the State Authorities In glad compliance with the proclamation of the public authorities, the people of the commonwealth have rested to-day from their ordinary vocations and have gathered here at the Capital of the State, to represent the universal sorrow, and pay a formal but heartfelt tribute of grief and respect to the memory of our murdered chief magistrate, who, like Israel's great leader, fell on the mount of vision, "while yet his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated." The irrepressible sorrow of our hearts prompts to the filial duty which, as a nation, we could not innocently neglect. It is the Christian apotheosis which a bereaved people may give to a ruler, the grand results of whose life, and the masculine beauty of whose character, have entitled him to the honor of father of the reestablished and regenerated republic. Treason, the cowardly offspring of slavery, in dalliance with political ambition, returning with reeking hands from the slaughter of three hundred thousand of our innocent children, and burning with the shame of defeat, has assassinated the foremost, the noblest and the best of our great men, and has thereby illustrated to the shocked and startled nations of the world the inherent wrong of oppression and the unutterable preciousness of liberty. The time, too, was ominous and suggestive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Memorial Address on the Life and Character of Abraham Lincoln: Delivered, at the Request of Both Houses of the Congress of America, Before Them, in the House of Representatives at Washington, on the 12th of February, 1866 Neither hereditary monarchy nor hereditary aristee racy planted itself on our soil; the only hereditary condition that fastened itself upon us was servitude. Xature works in sincerity, and is ever true to its law. The bee hives honey; the viper distils poison; the Vine stores its juices, and so do the poppy and the upas. In like manner every thought and every action ripens its seed, each according to its kind. In the individual man. Excerpt from Life and Character of Abraham Lincoln: An Address, Delivered at the Hall of the Normal University, April 19th, 1865 Friends and Fellow Citizens: I appear before you to-day with a preparation entirely unworthy of this great occasion. If every wakeful moment that has elapsed since the exercise was resolved upon had been devoted to the work, it would have been far too short a time for the elaboration of the high and mournful theme. But I find a consolation for this want of adequate previous thought in the reflection that the grief that afflicts us to-day, the terrible sorrow that has taken hold of the great heart of this nation, is too profound for any utterance. Our anguish is too poignant for words, however charged with woe. On such a theme, eloquence is a mockery. Forms of speech that have been prostituted to ordinary uses would profane the unutterable agony of the hour. To-day all human utterance seems commonplace; all expressions of ordinary grief seem mean and inadequate. Every heart is full of its own inexpressible emotion; and the silent look, the mute grasp of the hand, reveals it to every sympathizing heart more eloquently than the most finished periods or the most burning words. Our late beloved Chief Magistrate was endeared to every individual of the loyal millions of this people, as only a very few rulers have been to those whom they governed. Each feels as if the dastardly blow, inflicted as the last insane effort of a desperate and fiendish cause, had been struck at a member of his own household. Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: An Historical Address Then so much depends upon the point of view. In this regard, men are like mountains. A height of land towers over our heads: is it a mountain, splitting the clouds, and joining the earth and the sky; or is it a mere knoll, shutting from our view the real peaks which are just beyond it? In a deep and narrow valley, one has no idea how some mighty peak dominates the whole landscape for miles and miles. But when he gets away upon the other summits, he sees at once how easily it is the master and king of the en tire region. I repeat - so with men. We do not judge the public men of our own time with intelligence even, - let alone fairness and candor. No man, it is said, is a hero to his own valet. The genuine greatness or the essential littleness of those who figure largely in the world's affairs is not clearly perceived in their own times. To illustrate by familiar examples how have the contemporary estimates of Daniel Webster and of Charles Sumner changed since their deaths. You all know how John A. Andrew is reckoned to-day; but in 1862, there was a strong opposition to his re-election, even within his own party, and no less a man than Charles Dev ens was made the candidate of dissatisfied republicans, and of democrats eager to profit by the dissensions of their oppo neuts. At rare intervals, there appears upon the stage of human affairs, a man, whose life and deeds and character compel the attention, the admiration, and the lasting affection of the world. His is one of the few, the immortal names, that were not born to die. Generations come and generations go; but his memory, living and green, does not fade. Parties rise and fall; but his name becomes a household word, dear to the hearts and the lips of his countrymen. Great issues are settled so that the settlements mark clear gains for human progress his fortunes had been married to those great principles and his fame is forever linked with their triumph. His services, too carelessly estimated during his life-time, - his motives, often lightly aspersed by the thoughtless and the ignorant; his relations to progress and truth, so rarely understood by his fellow - citizens, particular ly when they seemed to threaten the triumph of some party or sect, these at last become evident. Then he receives the place in history to which he is entitled; his services, his motives and his various merits bring him again the happy experience of the modest guest, and the muse of history is constantly inviting him to come up higher.
