Two white middle-aged, middle-class scholars (William is at Sarah Lawrence College; Bonnie is a writer) went with their teenage son to teach at Makerere U. in Kampala for two years. Although active in the Episcopal Church, their mission was to learn about faith related to "the sacredness of ordinary encounter" rather than to proselytize. Their journal essays and poems center on war victims, poverty, literary/democratic nation building, new friends and other gifts of daily living. The papers in this volume examine the links between gender, time use, and poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa. They contribute to a broader definition of poverty to include "time poverty," and to a broader definition of work to include household work. The papers present a conceptual framework linking both market and household work, review some of the available literature and surveys on time use in Africa, and use tools and approaches drawn from analysis of consumption-based poverty to develop the concept of a time poverty line and to examine linkages between time poverty, consumption poverty, and ot.

Cancer Care In Pandemic Times Building Inclusive Local Health Security In Africa And India written by Geoffrey Banda and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-01-10 with Political Science categories.

This open access edited volume focuses on the scope and benefits of strengthening local industrial-health linkages. The Covid-19 pandemic collapsed international supply chains for health. That experience brought home to African policy makers the critical nature of local manufacturing capabilities for sustaining and strengthening health care, and highlighted the pandemic benefits of India’s much stronger industrial base. At that time, a network of researchers in East Africa, India and the UK were investigating how to address the crisis of cancer care in low-resource health systems. Their project, uniquely, focused on the scope and benefits of strengthening local industrial-health linkages. The project researchers were also drawn into the pressing demands of Covid19 response. The result is this very timely book. The authors link their research on cancer to pandemic experience, and they draw sharp lessons for how countries can enhance their populations’ health security. The authors argue that improving cancer care is crucial for human wellbeing and more inclusive health care. They challenge policy makers to bring together health needs, health innovations and improved industrial capabilities to embed better cancer care and broader health system improvement in local industrial innovation and development.

Africa In The Time Of Cholera written by Myron Echenberg and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-02-28 with History categories.

This book combines evidence from natural and social sciences to examine the impact on Africa of seven cholera pandemics since 1817, particularly the current impact of cholera on such major countries as Senegal, Angola, Mozambique, Congo, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Myron Echenberg highlights the irony that this once-terrible scourge, having receded from most of the globe, now kills thousands of Africans annually - Africa now accounts for more than 90 percent of the world's cases and deaths - and leaves many more with severe developmental impairment. Responsibility for the suffering caused is shared by Western lending and health institutions and by often venal and incompetent African leadership. If the threat of this old scourge is addressed with more urgency, great progress in the public health of Africans can be achieved.

Time For Africa S Emergence written by Sa’ah François Guimatsia and has been published by Book Venture Publishing LLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-30 with Political Science categories.

Where do things stand today in Africa, after some 56 years of independence? Well, the continent is not just a land of crises and hardships; it also has what it takes to become emergent this 21st century – abundant natural resources, a youthful and dynamic population, a great potential for growth, etc. But most wounds inflicted by the colonial and neocolonial systems to date remain unhealed. Africans therefore have three crucial prerequisites to fulfill for their continent’s renaissance: regain their lost cultural balance, put in place a solid economic backbone, and promote a leadership committed to good governance and continental integration. In this illuminating book written from a refreshing African perspective, the author examines the facts and shares his deep conviction – without indulging in angst or finger-pointing– that Africans should build their continent’s emergence on a great sense of patriotism combined with sound preparation and intelligent cooperation, bearing in mind the potent examples set by Nelson Mandela, Thomas Sankara and other world political icons.
