In a troubled social context by the impact of mass migration mixed with enthusiasm for the celebration of the First Centenary of the May Revolution in Argentina, Alfonsina Storni (1892-1938) joined an emergent Culture Industry. Her poems, chronicles, spoof letters and articles embodied her avant-garde thinking and her sense of parodying in the use of literature and commercial journalism. Storni was not just an easily accessible author who seduced crowds; as a poor woman, provincial teacher, and single mother, she was equally subjugated to the violent reality of Modern Buenos Aires. She explored writing as a path to self-knowledge, feminised resistance, and used first-person narrative to challenge misogynistic thinking, gender inequality and expected female stereotypes. Following her suicide, the media outlined a figure of her that echoed the irruption of catholic-nationalism and the rise of populist political culture with its own particular anecdotal and mythological reading of Storni.This study will look at Storni's performativity as part of first-wave feminism and how she was later portrayed in the persistence of Peronism through the various uses of its propaganda machine that, consequently, influenced a representation in a romantic and melodramatic light by the media, despite her strong feminist and socialist activism. Then, we will further look at the effects that Storni still has in a country where the feminist struggle against the androcentric culture tendencies and practises remains a constant feature.To show the complexity of Storni's appropriation over the decades by popular culture, it is essential to see Storni through her representations for 'analysing' and 'revealing' times of social change during the first half of the 20th century in Argentina. By doing so, we'll be able to shed light on aspects of her life as a committed woman with an intellectual creativity and cynical style that remained hidden by an ideologically-oriented archetypical characterisation.
