Throughout the first six decades of the twentieth century Alfred Louis Kroeber worked with great distinction as a member of an anthropological circle the ethos of which he could not fully share. His beliefs regarding the evolution of languages, and the controversial notion of cultural evolution more generally, conflicted with the reigning Boasian paradigm. Some of the concepts with which he struggled, such as the familial relationships among American languages and the emergent character of culture, became less problematic after he had passed from the scene. Although Kroeber is regarded as one of the founding figures of American anthropology, his contributions to the establishment of the genetic approach in historical linguistics were overshadowed by the genius of his collaborator and correspondent, Edward Sapir.

A.L. Kroeber conducted field work with several Klamath River groups, including the Karok, Wiyot, and Yurok Indians; the Yokuts Indians of Central California; with Ishi, the last member of the Yahi band of the Sacramento Valley; the Mohave Indians of the Colorado River region; and the Zuni Indians of New Mexico, among many other groups. He also carried out archaeological field work in Mexico and Peru. He published more that 500 books and articles on anthropological topics, and served as an expert witness in the Indian land claims cases Clyde F. Thompson et. al. v. United States, Docket No. 31, and Ernest Risling et. al. v. United States, Docket 37.

Alfred Louis Kroeber offers an all-embracing account of human culture, looking at its historical definitions, many definitions, and its role as a foundation for all of the social sciences. A work striking for its thoroughness, Culture: A Critical Review begins by examining the origins of the term Culture, and how it came to be associated with civilization and social change. The appearance of the word in intellectual writings, such as those of Kant and Hegel, increased through the 19th century. Interpretations of the word - as the later section on definitions shows - persisted in varying widely, with scholars differing in what they consider part of a given country's culture. Some constructed strict definitions involving things like a country's symbols, morality, festivals, and heritage while others opted to apply the term more generally or loosely. This conceptual problem serves as an overarching theme, its difficulty apparent in the many contrasting views the author quotes. Nevertheless by listing and commenting on these numerous ideas, Kroeber demonstrates the broadness of culture; its influence ranging into disciplines such as psychology, history, linguistics, medicine and sociology. The author himself considers this study as anthropology; a tracing of how culture emerged from occasional academic mentions and allusions into a dominant cluster of ideas, transcending many disciplines and assuming place in popular consciousness.

Alfred Louis Kroeber (June 11, 1876 - October 5, 1960) was an American anthropologist. Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, Kroeber attended Columbia College where he earned an A.B. in English and an M.A. in Romantic drama. In 1901 he received his Ph.D. under Franz Boas at Columbia University. Shortly after, he was the first professor appointed to the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, and played an integral role in the early days of its Museum of Anthropology, where he served as director from 1909 through 1947. Although he is known primarily as a cultural anthropologist, he did significant work in archaeology and anthropological linguistics, and he contributed to anthropology by making connections between archaeology and culture. He is credited with developing the concepts of culture area, cultural configuration, and cultural fatigue. This book contains the complete "Decorative Symbolism of the Arapaho" (1901), "The Arapaho" (1902), and "Arapaho Dialects" (1916), three important primary sources on the Arapaho people. As Julian H. Steward wrote in his obituary, "It is impossible ... to do justice to a great scientist whose works are still a very living part of anthropology and related disciplines. Kroeber's place in history will be determined by the scholars who continue to be influenced by his writings in the future...."
