Dia membangun berbagai fasilitas publik dan memperbaiki kampung kumuh, berupaya mengatasi banjir dengan menyiapkan kawasan hijau yang mengelilingi ibu kota, membangun tempat berkumpul bagi para seniman, dan ikut mendirikan Lembaga Bantuan Hukum Jakarta. Namun, kepemimpinan Bang Ali bukan tanpa kontroversi. Dia, misalnya, melegalkan perjudian dan memungut pajaknya untuk mengubah wajah kota yang suram menjadi metropolis. Bang Ali tidak peduli meski dicaci maki dan dijuluki Ògubernur maksiatÓ. Setelah tidak menjabat gubernur, dia bergabung dengan kelompok Petisi 50 dan tak ragu menunjukkan sikap politik yang berseberangan dengan Presiden Soeharto.
