This book reports on a public archaeology project carried out at the ancient site of Tilmen Höyük in south-eastern Turkey. The project developed and applied new methodologies and advanced technologies for the planning, design, conservation and management of an archaeological park at a site of high cultural, environmental and touristic interest, representing a significant study case for other archaeological sites in the Mediterranean area and beyond. It highlights state-of-the-art techniques of remote sensing, both for archaeological surveying and for territorial and environmental analysis through the study of high-definition aerial photos and digital photogrammetry. It also takes into account the ecological and environmental characterization data elaborated by environmental and botanic experts, fundamental for the purposes of eco-sustainability and management of the site, through climate and ground measurements aiming at vegetation control and a management model for the archaeological site itself and its green areas of outstanding naturalistic interest. Further, the book comprehensively discusses the analysis of the state of preservation of the archaeological remains and their effective conservation based on a set of measures guided by the principles of minimum intervention, feasibility and low impact on the remains, the site and its landscape. Moreover, it presents novel devices and fixed structures aimed at protecting the fragile archaeological remains and allowing safe access to visitors to the newly created archaeological park. At the intersection of archaeology, architecture and natural sciences, this book appeals to researchers and specialists in archaeology, social sciences, environmental sciences, conservation, architecture and engineering disciplines.

This volume charts the radical transformation of an inner city neighbourhood in late antique Carthage which was excavated over a five-year period by a team from the University of Cambridge. Bordering the main thoroughfare leading from the Brysa Hill to the ports, the neighbourhood remained primarily a residential one from the second century until 530s AD when a substantial basilica was constructed over the eastern half of the insula. Further extensive modifications were made to the basilica half-a-century later when the structures on the western half of the insula were demolished and the basilica greatly enlarged with the addition of a new east-west aisles, a large monumental baptistery and a crypt. By carefully reconstructing the complex architectural plan of this innovative building, this study shows how the re-modelled Bir Messaouda basilica was transformed into a major pilgrimage centre overturning established tradition that located such complexes outside the city walls. The Bir Messaouda basilica provides important insights into the transition between Vandal and Byzantine control of the city, the development of a new Christian inter-mural urban landscape in the sixth century AD, and the significance of the pilgrimage in reinforcing ecclesiastical authority in post-Justinianic North Africa.

Non c’è dubbio: è all’immenso potere dei libri che si deve la diffusione dell’Illuminismo. Ma come si spiega la loro forza dirompente in un’epoca in cui non esisteva la libertà di stampa? Nella Francia dell’Ancien Régime ogni pubblicazione dipendeva infatti da un tortuoso iter, senza il quale era impossibile ottenere il «privilège» concesso dal re. Per di più la Corporazione parigina dei librai e stampatori, grazie a una complessa rete di relazioni tipica di un’oligarchia endogama, dominava in tutto il regno, paralizzando di fatto le imprese di provincia. Lo scenario che Darnton dischiude in questo libro, frutto di lunghe, tenaci ricerche d’archivio, è perturbante: quasi tutte le opere che hanno trasmesso il pensiero dei «philosophes» furono stampate in quella «Mezzaluna Fertile» che da Amsterdam e Bruxelles giungeva sino ad Avignone (allora territorio papale) passando per la Renania e la Svizzera, e distribuite in maniera clandestina – erano insomma frutto di pirateria. Tempestivamente informati sulle novità da spregiudicati agenti che operavano a Parigi, animati da una sete di profitto pari solo alla loro audacia, braccati dal tempo, assediati da non meno animosi concorrenti, i pirati dell’editoria potrebbero apparire come i perfetti rappresentanti di un capitalismo predatorio. Eppure, ci rivela Darnton, assolvevano un compito rivoluzionario: produrre a buon mercato libri per un pubblico nuovo, composto dai ceti intermedi. Agendo al di fuori della legge, assecondavano dunque, paradossalmente, la battaglia dei «livres philosophiques», che quella legge, fondamento dei privilegi dell’Ancien Régime, sfidavano in maniera aperta.
