ENGISH DESCRIPTION On September 11, 1973, Salvador Allende became a myth. The bombing of La Moneda, the beauty and drama of his last words, and his sacrifice in defense of Chile's democratic development, along with the ominous dictatorship that was established in the country, gave his name universal dimensions. Fifty years after those events that shook the world, this biography goes beyond the myth. With the agility of a journalist and the rigor of a historian, Mario Amorós meticulously recounts Allende's political trajectory and paints a carefully crafted human portrait. Throughout these pages, we discover his family roots and meet the young man who, guided by an anarchist carpenter, embraced emancipatory ideas. We encounter the socially conscious doctor who participated in the founding and expansion of the Socialist Party, the representative and senator who advocated for progressive legislation, the leader who united the left, and the revolutionary who championed socialism "in democracy, pluralism, and freedom." We also get to know the president who, during those one thousand days, nationalized copper, ended large landholdings, and promoted popular participation and significant democratic transformations. Half a century after the coup d'état, Allende's values and causes remain relevant and keep his figure alive in Chile and around the world.

Untangling the long history of neoliberalism Neoliberalism is dead. Again. Yet the philosophy of the free market and the strong state has an uncanny capacity to survive, and even thrive, in times of crisis. Understanding neoliberalism’s longevity and its latest permutation requires a more detailed understanding of its origins and development. This volume breaks with the caricature of neoliberalism as a simple, unvariegated belief in market fundamentalism and homo economicus. It shows how neoliberal thinkers perceived institutions from the family to the university, disagreed over issues from intellectual property rights and human behavior to social complexity and monetary order, and sought to win consent for their project through the creation of new honors, disciples, and networks. Far from a monolith, neoliberal thought is fractured and, occasionally, even at war with itself. We can begin to make sense of neoliberalism’s nine lives only by understanding its own tangled and complex history.

Landscapes written by Gerhard Richter and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Art, Abstract categories.

Gerhard Richter (*1932 in Dresden) has always dealt with the landscape. No other motif has fascinated him as much or kept him so occupied over the years: black-and-white landscapes based on images from magazines and amateur photos; views of mountains and parks painted in thick impasto; softly hued, transparent, illusionist lake scenes. Ever since the subtle Corsica paintings of 1968/69, landscapes have become an established, distinct group of works within the artist's oeuvre. Richter captures reality in a painterly way, such that landscape and abstraction manifest not as opposites but as related concepts. Containing outstanding illustrations and insightful texts, this volume examines Richter's landscapes from the early sixties to the present. (German edition ISBN 978-3-7757-2638-2)

Now, for the first time, Peter R. Mitchell and John Schoeffel have assembled the best of Chomsky's talks on the politics of power. With an eye to political activism and the media’s role in popular struggle, as well as US foreign and domestic policy, Chomsky reinterprets the events of the past three decades, from foreign policy during the Vietnam War to the decline of welfare under the Clinton administration. Highlighting America’s myriad of social inequalities and political issues while offering timely advice for much needed change, Understanding Power is definitive Chomsky. ‘Chomsky ranks with Marx, Shakespeare and the Bible as one of the ten most quoted sources in the humanities’ Guardian ‘Powerful and timely...his analysis is fair, meticulously researched and fascinating’ Observer

'An important and long-overdue contribution to our knowledge of Tolstoy.' D. M. Thomas, Sunday TimesVolume 1 of Tolstoy's Diaries covers the years 1847-1894 and was meticulously edited by R.F. Christian so as to reflect Tolstoy's preoccupations as a writer (his views on his own work and that of others), his development as a person and as a thinker, and his attitudes to contemporary social problems, rural life, industrialisation, education, and later, to religious and spiritual questions.Christian introduces each period with a brief and informative summary of the main biographical details of Tolstoy's life. The result is a unique portrait of a great writer in the variegation of his everyday existence.'As a picture of the turbulent Russian world which Tolstoy inhabited these diaries are incomparable - the raw stuff not yet processed into art.' Anthony Burgess'A model of scholarship, one of the most important books to be published in recent years.' A. N. Wilson, Spectator

Julian Assange written by Julian Assange and has been published by Canongate Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-09-22 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In December 2010, Julian Assange signed a contract with Canongate Books to write a book – part memoir, part manifesto – for publication the following year. At the time, Julian said: ‘I hope this book will become one of the unifying documents of our generation. In this highly personal work, I explain our global struggle to force a new relationship between the people and their governments.’ In the end, the work was to prove too personal. Despite sitting for more than fifty hours of taped interviews and spending many late nights at Ellingham Hall (where he was living under house arrest) discussing his life and the work of WikiLeaks with the writer he had enlisted to help him, Julian became increasingly troubled by the thought of publishing an autobiography. After reading the first draft of the book at the end of March, Julian declared: ‘All memoir is prostitution.’ In June 2011, with thirty-eight publishing houses around the world committed to releasing the book, Julian told us he wanted to cancel his contract. We disagree with Julian’s assessment of the book. We believe it explains both the man and his work, underlining his commitment to the truth. Julian always claimed the book was well written; we agree, and this also encouraged us to make the book available to readers. And the contract? By the time Julian wanted to cancel the deal he had already used the advance money to settle his legal bills. So the contract still stands. We have decided to honour it – and to publish. This book is the unauthorised first draft. It is passionate, provocative and opinionated – like its author. It fulfils the promise of the original proposal and we are proud to publish it. In the waning years of Latin America's longest and bloodiest civil war, the rise of an unlikely duo is transforming Colombia: Christianity and access to credit. In her exciting new book, Rebecca C. Bartel details how surging evangelical conversions and widespread access to credit cards, microfinance programs, and mortgages are changing how millions of Colombians envision a more prosperous future. Yet programs of financialization propel new modes of violence. As prosperity becomes conflated with peace, and debt with devotion, survival only becomes possible through credit and its accompanying forms of indebtedness. A new future is on the horizon, but it will come at a price.
