Patricia Bizzell has argued that teachers of composition, if they are going to prepare students for success in other classrooms and other contexts, cannot afford to ignore alternative forms of discourse that are appearing now in the academy. This edited collection of original essays both discusses and at times exemplifies extraordinary examples of just such alternatives-discourses that embody new and different forms of intellectual work Together, their writings pose and answer some intriguing questions about the: use of nonstandard discourse to illustrate unconventional forms of intellectual work role of nonstandard discourse in scholarship from disciplines across the curriculum theoretical complexities of discourses defined as "alternative," "hybrid," "mixed," or "constructed" relationships among communities, discourses, and linguistic standards new conditions in composition classrooms made up of more students of English as a foreign language and students using non-standard dialects teacher-student relationships within the context of alternative forms of intellectual work. Using unconventional structures and formats while acknowledging new modes and methods, this provocative volume argues eloquently for inclusion of a broader range of expression in academic writing.

A World Without Capitalism written by Christian W. Chun and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-15 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

In this book, Christian W. Chun examines the ways in which identities, discourses, and topographies of both capitalist and anti-capitalist imaginaries and realities are embodied in the everyday practices of people. A World without Capitalism? is a sociolinguistic ethnography that explores the heretofore limited research in applied linguistics and sociolinguistics on the discursive and materialized representations and enactments of capitalism. Engaging across disciplinary fields, including applied linguistics, ethnography, political economy, philosophy, and cultural studies, Chun investigates in ethnographic detail how capitalism does and does not pervade people’s everyday experiences. This book aims to further contribute to a much-needed understanding of how discourses operate in the co-constructions of capitalist and anti-capitalist imaginaries and instantiated realities and practices as narrated, lived, and embodied by people and material artifacts. This book is vital reading for students and researchers working in the fields of applied linguistics, discourse analysis, and cultural studies, as well as those interested in understanding capitalism and questioning how to live beyond it.

Alternative Discourses On Modernization And Development written by Kim Kyong-Dong and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-08 with Social Science categories.

This cutting edge work offers an alternative perspective on existing paradigms of modernization and development that originated in the West from the vantage point of non-western, late-modernizing societies. It considers how East Asian philosophical ideas enrich the reformulation of the concept of development or societal development, and how influential principles of traditional culture such as yin-yang dialectic interact with modern ideas and technology. It addresses the significance of alternative discourses as culturally independent scholarship, and the problems of pervasive mechanisms of social, political, economic, and cultural dependence in the global academic world.

While Latinos and Latinas are the youngest and largest U.S. minority group, they continue to be among the poorest and least educated. A major contribution of Creating Alternative Discourses in the Education of Latinos and Latinas is that it provides scholars, teachers, and practitioners with counter-hegemonic theories, methods, and pedagogies that challenge the mainstream assumptions about the education of this group. Drawing on rich ethnographic portrayals including life history interviews, focus groups, and participant observation, this interdisciplinary volume bridges diverse bodies of literature in an attempt to bring about changes in the education of Latinos and Latinas.

Like anywhere else, the present-day Islamic world too is grappling with modernity and postmodernity, secularisation and globalisation. Muslims are raising questions about religious representations and authority. This has given rise to the emergence of alternative Islamic discourses which challenge binary oppositions and dichotomies of orthodoxy and heterodoxy, continuity and change, state and civil society. It also leads to a dispersal of authority, a collapse of existing hierarchical structures and gender roles. This book further argues that the centre of gravity of many of these alternative Islamic discourses is shifting from the Arabic-speaking 'heartland' towards the geographical peripheries of the Muslim world and expatriate Muslims in North America and Europe. At the same time, in view of recent seismic shifts in the political constellation of the Middle East, the trends discussed in this book hold important clues for the possible direction of future developments in that volatile part of the Muslim world.

This book addresses a set of problems surrounding the state of the social sciences in Asia. It contextualizes problems by pointing to the historical and continuing dominance over Asian social science discourses by Western paradigms and concepts. Syed Farid Alatas documents various critiques of the state of the social sciences in Asia and critically assesses the prescriptions for alternative discourses that have emerged from these critiques. Among the important features of this book are that it has a pan-Asian focus and that it incorporates perspectives drawn from economics and sociology.
