The plan of the work is inductive and practical, and the author has endeavored to make the book a useful one for the purposes of teaching. Every principle is presented through the observation of examples of good English. The study of grammar aids the student to master his mother-tongue, but its chief function is to secure mental discipline. For the development of the intellectual powers, the capable teacher, well furnished with rational methods, will find this study superior to all others. It is a study in recognizing similarities, in distinguishing differences, in making abstractions, in forming generalizations. The object of Parts I.-IV. of this book is to contribute something to the science of elementary English grammar. Part V. treats of composition. The usual exercises in completing half-built sentences, in straightening out wrecks of sentences, in combining simple sentences into complex sentences, in expanding phrases into clauses, etc., will not be found therein. They have done quite enough towards fostering stupidity in our schools. The art of expression is acquired through steady practice, therefore pupils should write compositions not once a week, but during part of every period, about things which they understand. Excerpt from The Public School Grammar: And Elements of Composition; With Numerous Exercises; Authorized for Use in the Public Schools of Ontario by the Minister of Education In offering this book to his fellow-teachers, the author lays claim to no other merit than that of having earnestly endeavored to present the elementary principles of English Grammar in such a way that they can be readily comprehended by the youth of our Public Schools, and made helpful to them in the correct use of their mother tongue. The lessons have been so framed as to lead the learner, step by step, to discover the essential truths of Grammar by observing the facts of actual speech; and then these truths have been made tributary to the art of correct expression by exercises in Composition. Advantage has thus been taken of the pleasure that a discovery and its immediate application always afford to allure young pupils to the study; while, by proceeding on the principle of "one thing at a time," and dividing the book into consecutive parts, pains have been taken to avoid disgusting and discouraging them. Part I. aims at rendering the learner thoroughly acquainted with the nature of the Sentence, and with the function of each Part of Speech, - this knowledge being deduced from the very necessities of speech itself. It is believed that this Part may be taken up by pupils in the Junior Division of the Third Book; and for this reason the language here has purposely been made simple and semi-colloquial. If a pupil has to leave school after having mastered this Part only, he will carry with him much exact and useful knowledge concerning the Sentence and the words that compose it. Part II. gives the Classification or sub-division of the Parts of Speech in the order in which they were learnt, thus calling them again to mind, and further impressing their function upon the memory. It is thought that this Part may be mastered while pupils are in the Senior Division of the Third Book; and that Parts III. and IV., which deal with Inflection and Syntax, may be mastered while pupils are passing through the Fourth Book. Some useful information on the Alphabet, Use of Capitals, Punctuation, and Letter-Writing, which did not fall logically under any of the preceding Parts, has been given in Part V. as an Appendix.
