A young Chinese girl forced to work in a New York sweatshop calls child services on her mother in this powerful memoir about labour and self-worth, economic revolution, and cultural dislocation. As a teen, Anna Qu is sent by her mother to work in her family's garment factory in Queens. At home, she is treated as a maid and suffers punishment for doing her homework at night. Her mother wants to teach her a lesson: she is Chinese, not American, and such is their tough path in their new country. But instead of acquiescing, Qu alerts the Office of Children and Family Services, an act with consequences that impact the rest of her life. Nearly twenty years later, estranged from her mother and working at a Manhattan start-up, Qu requests her social services report. When it arrives, key details are wrong. Faced with this false narrative, and on the brink of losing her job as the once-shiny start-up collapses, Qu looks once more at her life's truths, from abandonment to an abusive family to seeking meaning in work. Travelling from Wenzhou to Xi'an to New York, Made in Chinais a fierce memoir unafraid to ask thorny questions about trauma and survival, capitalism, and the struggle for individual dignity.

In Search for Sherpur: An Immigrant's Memoir By Prof. J.Bhattacharyya, US (Edited by: Dr. T.Ghosh, US) My supposedly one month Christmas vacation to Calcutta became a lifelong homelessness. I was just promoted to Class IX which was in charge of the annual school Saraswati Puja. I had stood first. I had bought my new text books, which, alas, I would never read. The shift to Calcutta was the start of a cascading series of changes. I became distant from Ma. My voice had broken when we were in Bhowanipur, at Dada's in law's house. When Ma came a few months later I was shy to go to her. This was pretty weird: I was the baby boy! There fell a screen of self- consciousness that never lifted. I loved her, I worshipped her, but I stopped being as natural to her as, say, Sonada. We shifted from house to house, and after Didi's marriage, in 1952, had lost all center. Our family as I had known it in Sherpur had come apart. Baba died in 1954. In tandem with our family disorganization came economic distress. So we the younger boys did what we could on our own devices. My own journey to MA and beyond is rationally inexplicable. Maybe the four years in Kenderdine Lane madly reading continental literature and meeting a wide diversity of people had something to do with it. I was tired of our poverty and the apathy about it. I think I broke free by deciding to study for MA, at the very young fresh faced Jadavpur University, in 1957. Sherpur was Home! That inexplicable place. I have traveled in six continents, happily and enjoyably. I have lived in three. I am still searching for my home.

My Boy Will Die Of Sorrow written by Efrén C. Olivares and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-12 with Social Science categories.

INTERNATIONAL LATINO BOOK AWARD WINNER - The Raul Yzaguirre Best Political/Current Affairs Book This deeply personal perspective from a human rights lawyer—whose work on the front lines of the fight against family separations in South Texas intertwines with his own story of immigrating to the United States at thirteen—reframes the United States' history as a nation of immigrants but also a nation against immigrants. In the summer of 2018, Efrén C. Olivares found himself representing hundreds of immigrant families when Zero Tolerance separated thousands of children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border. Twenty-five years earlier, he had been separated from his own father for several years when he migrated to the U.S. to work. Their family was eventually reunited in Texas, where Efrén and his brother went to high school and learned a new language and culture. By sharing these gripping family separation stories alongside his own, Olivares gives voice to immigrants who have been punished and silenced for seeking safety and opportunity. Through him we meet Mario and his daughter Oralia, Viviana and her son Sandro, Patricia and her son Alessandro, and many others. We see how the principles that ostensibly bind the U.S. together fall apart at its borders. My Boy Will Die of Sorrow reflects on the immigrant experience then and now, on what separations do to families, and how the act of separation itself adds another layer to the immigrant identity. Our concern for fellow human beings who live at the margins of our society—at the border, literally and figuratively—is shaped by how we view ourselves in relation both to our fellow citizens and to immigrants. He discusses not only law and immigration policy in accessible terms, but also makes the case for how this hostility is nothing new: children were put in cages when coming through Ellis Island, and Japanese Americans were forcibly separated from their families and interned during WWII. By examining his personal story and the stories of the families he represents side by side, Olivares meaningfully engages readers with their assumptions about what nationhood means in America and challenges us to question our own empathy and compassion.

A “moving…dramatic” (David Ebershoff, New York Times bestselling author of The Danish Girl), and urgent call to action for immigration justice by a Nigerian asylee and global gay rights and immigration activist Edafe Okporo. On the eve of Edafe Okporo’s twenty-sixth birthday, he was awoken by a violent mob outside his window in Abuja, Nigeria. The mob threatened his life after discovering the secret Edafe had been hiding for years—that he is a gay man. Left with no other choice, he purchased a one-way plane ticket to New York City and fled for his life. Though America had always been painted to him as a land of freedom and opportunity, it was anything but when he arrived just days before the tumultuous 2016 Presidential Election. Edafe would go on to spend the next six months at an immigration detention center in Elizabeth, New Jersey. After navigating the confusing, often draconian, US immigration and legal system, he was finally granted asylum. But he would soon realize that America is exceptionally good at keeping people locked up but is seriously lacking in integrating freed refugees into society. Asylum is Edafe’s “powerful, eye-opening” (Dr. Eric Cervini, New York Times bestselling author of The Deviant’s War) memoir and manifesto, which documents his experiences growing up gay in Nigeria, fleeing to America, navigating the immigration system, and making a life for himself as a Black, gay immigrant. Alongside his personal story is a blaring call to action—not only for immigration reform but for a just immigration system for refugees everywhere. This book imagines a future where immigrants and asylees are treated with fairness, transparency, and compassion. It aims to help us understand that home is not just where you feel safe and welcome but also how you can make it feel safe and welcome for others.

Remember Alan Kurdi, the three-year-old Syrian refugee who drowned and washed to the Turkish shore? This book is about another child--a Jewish kid from Iraq who barely survived the trauma of exile to Israel years earlier and ended up in the United States. It tells the story of his happy life in Iraq where his family dated back for thousands of years, moves to his second and very challenging life as a Black (Sephardi) boy living in tents in several transition camps and working as a Picker in Israel, and ends with his story as a grownup finally finding home in the United States It is an intimate, lyrical memoir of a child looking for home, a powerful tale of his three lives in Iraq, Israel and the US--lives of dislocation, despair and transformation, shared by many refugees and immigrants around the world. The book opens with a synopsis of the tumultuous love story of his other mother and proceeds to tell the story of his three lives, which are intertwined with the love story of his other mother, immigration, near death experience, transformation, and eventually to a life worth living. Narrated in the first person, it captivates the reader with its honesty, hope and affirmation of the human spirit.
