This is the first of a two-volume collection of studies in inconsistencies in Greek and Roman religion. Their common aim is to argue for the historical relevance of various types of ambiguity and dissonance. The first volume focuses on the central paradoxes in ancient henotheism. The term 'henotheism' -- a modern formation after the stereotyped acclamation: #EIS O QEOS# ("one is the god"), common to early Christianity and contemporaneous paganism -- denotes the specific devotion to one particular god without denying the existence of, or even cultic attention to, other gods. After its prime in the twenties and thirties of this century the term fell into disuse. Nonetheless, the notion of henotheism represents one of the most remarkable and significant shifts in Graeco-Roman religion and hence deserves fresh reconsideration.

A beautiful book on the famed Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas The Chinati Foundation, a world-famous destination for large-scale contemporary art, was founded by Donald Judd (1928-1994) to preserve and present a select number of permanent installations that were inextricably linked to the surrounding landscape in Marfa, Texas. This handsome publication, first published in 2010 and now available with a new chapter devoted to the permanent installation by Robert Irwin that was inaugurated in 2016 and a new foreword by Jenny Moore, director of the Chinati Foundation, describes how Judd developed his ideas of the role of art and museums from the early 1960s onward, culminating in the creation of Chinati. The individual installations featured here include work by John Chamberlain, Dan Flavin, David Rabinowitch, Roni Horn, Ilya Kabakov, Richard Long, Ingólfur Arnarsson, Carl Andre, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen, and John Wesley, as well as by Judd himself. The book also features a complete catalogue of the collection and writings by Judd relating to Chinati and Marfa. Published in association with the Chinati Foundation/La Fundación Chinati

Reading The Song Of Roland written by Eugene Vance and has been published by Englewood Cliffs, N.J. : Prentice-Hall this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1970 with Literary Criticism categories.

"Reading the Song of Roland" was written to encourage readers to recognize among the obscurities, the contradictions, and the improbable hyperboles of the "Song of Roland", a number of unmistakable triumphs which will make them eager ot come to grips with the poem and its feudal world. Aside from its capacity to entertain us or to serve as an ethnological prism, the "Song of Roland" raises fascinating critical and interpretive problems that are relevant to other heroic poems and to the study of poetry as an art. "Reading the Song of Roland" discusses the poem not only as a revelation of conflicting attitudes and beliefs in the unknown poet and his contemporaries in medieval France and also as a tragic utterance which is unique because of its peculiar mode of expression. Special sections at the end of the book include pertinent chronology, a sketch of the historical event upon which the poem is supposedly based, a synopsis of critical reactions to the legend of Roland, and suggestions for further reading for those who are eager to explore this fascinating epic in more depth. -- From publisher's description.
