Fue Moratín uno de los fundadores de la historiografía teatral española. Sus Orígenes del teatro español, obra que dejó inédita y que fue publicada en 1830-1831 por la Real Academia de la Historia, es uno de los primeros estudios serios y documentados del teatro español anterior a Lope de Vega. Es también de gran interés el «Prólogo» a la edición parisina de sus obras en 1825, en donde resume, desde una perspectiva clasicista la historia del teatro español del siglo XVIII. Moratín fue también un activo impulsor de la reforma teatral de su tiempo.
