Jean è figlio di una violenza e durante l'infanzia e la giovinezza, trascorse soprattutto dalle parti di Compiègne, nord della Francia, non lontano da Parigi, cresce nella casetta dei custodi, distante e al tempo stesso vicino alle famiglie ricche della zona. Si arrabatta, cerca di distinguersi dagli altri bambini e una giovane signora benestante lo prende sotto la sua tutela. La tradirà, come ha sempre tradito tutti, con nonchalance. Tutto in questa storia avviene per caso. Tutto è appena accennato. Persino la guerra, che aleggia sulle pagine centrali del romanzo e che condiziona l'intera vita del protagonista, rimane sfumata, sullo sfondo.
