Few places in the United States confound and fascinate Americans like Appalachia, yet no other area has been so markedly mischaracterized by the mass media. Stereotypes of hillbillies and rednecks repeatedly appear in representations of the region, but few, if any, of its many heroes, visionaries, or innovators are ever referenced. Make no mistake, they are legion: from Anne Royall, America's first female muckraker, to Sequoyah, a Cherokee mountaineer who invented the first syllabary in modern times, and international divas Nina Simone and Bessie Smith, as well as writers Cormac McCarthy, Edward Abbey, and Nobel Laureate Pearl S. Buck, Appalachia has contributed mightily to American culture — and politics. Not only did eastern Tennessee boast the country's first antislavery newspaper, Appalachians also established the first District of Washington as a bold counterpoint to British rule. With humor, intelligence, and clarity, Jeff Biggers reminds us how Appalachians have defined and shaped the United States we know today.

Appalachia first entered the American consciousness as a distinct region in the decades following the Civil War. The place and its people have long been seen as backwards and 'other' because of their perceived geographical, social, and economic isolation. These essays, by fourteen eminent historians and social scientists, illuminate important dimensions of early social life in diverse sections of the Appalachian mountains. The contributors seek to place the study of Appalachia within the context of comparative regional studies of the United States, maintaining that processes and patterns thought to make the region exceptional were not necessarily unique to the mountain South. The contributors are Mary K. Anglin, Alan Banks, Dwight B. Billings, Kathleen M. Blee, Wilma A. Dunaway, John R. Finger, John C. Inscoe, Ronald L. Lewis, Ralph Mann, Gordon B. McKinney, Mary Beth Pudup, Paul Salstrom, Altina L. Waller, and John Alexander Williams

Nestle in the valley of the great Appalachia mountains lies the small coal mining town of Waverly, West Virigina. The time is the early nineteen hundreds. It's a story about the America you never knew existed, and how it became the world's most powerful nation in the world. Times was tough back then, money was tight, and jobs were hard to find. The town 's people was mostly of diverse backgrounds, coal miners, small shop owners, and farmers with fields of alfalfa, soybeans, and corn ready for harvest. Morning started at daybreak and ended with the setting sun. It was a close-knit town, depending on their neighbor in times of need and leaving the rest to the good Lord. There were no tv. no phones, no radios, because there was no electricity. Gas lights lit the streets and houses. The Stone family was one of those families, widow Mandy and her teenage son Jeremy. What was it like back then? It was filled with adventures, The gold rush days, the Ford Brother's auto-mobile, the Wright Brothers amazing flying machine, the unbelieving light bulb that was on the drawing board, trips to the fair grounds to see the Hot Air Balloon Races, Gypsy Rose's great puzzle, trips to the Big Sandy River to see the beautiful Paddle Boats, Banjo Billy and his goin' to the happy ground's suit, new inventions happened almost daily. Never a dull moment it the little town. Lots to do, lots to see. It's a fun book, that will keep you guessing what will happen next. It is a story you won't soon forget.
