Contemporary argumentation studies continue a tradition founded by Aristotle, Cicero, Quintilian and others. Since the end of the Second World War, they have been vigorously taken over and reoriented by different schools of thought, stressing their link to the renovated disciplines of logic, dialectic, rhetoric or grammar. Anscombre, Blair, Ducrot, van Eemeren, Grize, Grootendorst, Hamblin, Johnson, Olbrechts-Tyteca, Perelman, Toulmin, Walton, Woods, and many others, have reconceptualized the field, reconnected it to contemporary scholarship and opened up rigorous and innovative avenues of research. At the turn of the century, argumentation in science education and argumentation about socio-scientific issues emerged as new fields within the larger area of argumentation studies. Within this diverse and challenging context, this comprehensive Dictionary makes a significant contribution to the construction of a common culture and shared vocabulary of argumentation. Argumentation is approached as an all-pervasive linguistic-cognitive activity, and argumentation studies are posited as a multidisciplinary field. This Dictionary of Argumentation defines 301 concepts. The 223 main entries define, comment upon, and illustrate a specific concept or a set of interrelated concepts. The 78 secondary entries refer to the relevant main entry (-ies). The relationships between the entries are marked by a system of cross-references, which strengthen the conceptual coherence of the Dictionary as a whole. This is the first dictionary of its kind to be published in English.

This volume offers a unique collection of articles investigating the often neglected phenomenon of parentheticals, which are commonly seen as expressions interrupting the linear structure of a host utterance, but lacking a structural relation to it. The book provides an up-to-date introduction to the subject, as well as a range of research articles addressing questions including the syntactic link between parenthetical and frame utterance, the relation between syntactic and prosodic form, the usage and interpretation of parentheticals, and many more. It embraces research findings from different European languages (English, German, Dutch, Romance) and covers an array of forms of syntactic interpolations (from one-word parentheticals to clausal) and a range of methodologies, including empirical research, corpus research, and theoretical analyses. The collection underlines the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to a multi-faceted phenomenon such as parentheticals.

Public opinion polls point to a continuing decline in confidence in the Presidency, court system, Congress, the news media, state government, public education, and other key institutions. Moy and Pfau analyze the reasons for this crisis of confidence, with particular attention to the role of the media. Moy and Pfau examine the impact of sociodemographic factors, political expertise, and use of communication media on people's perceptions of confidence in democratic institutions. Their conclusions are based on two years of data collection. In three waves between 1995 and 1997, they conducted a series of content analyses of media depictions of democratic institutions in conjunction with general survey data. The result is one of the most comprehensive examinations ever conducted on the influence of the media on public confidence. It will be of great value to scholars, researchers, students, and professionals in government and the media.

First, the tools of each perspective are carefully explicated in chapters on the resources of discoursal, rhetorical, and social theory. These three perspectives are then brought together in extensive analyses of various everyday texts. Finally, the book reflects on the principles and consequences of conducting theoretically informed critical textual analysis. For researchers analyzing everyday texts and for scholars teaching theories and methods of analysis, Analyzing Everyday Texts will be an invaluable addition to the current literature.

Systematic Approaches To Argument By Analogy written by Henrique Jales Ribeiro and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-09 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

The present volume assembles a relevant set of studies of argument by analogy, which address this topic in a systematic fashion, either from an essentially theoretical perspective or from the perspective of it being applied to different fields like politics, linguistics, literature, law, medicine, science in general and philosophy. All result from original research conducted by their authors for this publication. Thus, broadly speaking, this is an exception which we find worthy of occupying a special place in the sphere of the bibliography on the argument by analogy. In effect, most of the contexts of the publications on this topic focus on specific areas, for example everyday discourse, science or law theory, while underestimating or sometimes even ignoring other interdisciplinary scopes, as is the case of literature, medicine or philosophy. The idiosyncrasy of this volume is that the reader and the researcher may follow the development of different theoretical outlooks on argument by analogy, while measuring the scope of its (greater or lesser) application to the aforementioned areas as a whole.
