Excerpt from Principles of Architectural Composition: An Attempt to Order and Phrase Ideas Which Have Hitherto Been Only Felt by the Instinctive Taste of Designers John Beverly Robinson It is, of course, a question whether architecture, in our time, will improve in its artistic character, or will deteriorate until that character is wholly lost. There is a tendency in each direction. The evil influences which cause the tendency downwards are numerous, and have been discussed on many occasions - the commercial demands which control nearly all costly buildings, the ignorance of the public men whose opinions control what is erected for the State, the changed position of the architect from that of a salaried artistic supervisor to that of a highly paid fiduciary administrator, and the disappearance from the modern world of the ancient instinct towards ornamental design. The good ih fluence which causes a tendency upward is merely the slowly developed sense of our own short-comings caused by that very self-conscious, comparative study of ourselves and of the past which has injured architec tural design in the past but as we believe in the past only to help it greatly in the future. Excerpt from A Discussion of Composition: As Applied to Architecture Persons of various interests have asked me to recommend a work on Architecture as an Art. There was nothing that exactly met their require ments, and this suggested the idea of writing some thing, myself. Although some of these pages are primarily for students of architecture, I hope the general public may find matter of interest in the book. Its first concrete form was a course of lec tures I delivered at Cornell University, between the years 1897 and 1900. The present Discussion of Composition is divided into six parts. The first treats the general laws of character in art; the second, general technical laws; the last four have to do with applications, three and five being, respectively, theoretical discussions of decoration and plan, four and six containing practical suggestions in the same subjects. Excerpt from Architectural Composition: An Attempt to Order and Phrase Ideas Which Hitherto Have Been Only A conviction in the mind of the author of the possibility of formulating the approved practice of architects in designing the exterior of buildings resulted in the publication in 1898 of a series of articles upon the Principles of Architectural Composition in the Architectural Record, which were afterward reprinted in book form. This was favorably received, and formed the basis of a course of lectures which has been given by the author annually for some years at Columbia University before the students of the School of Architecture. The theories involved have never been impugned, nor indeed can they well be; as they comprise only generalizations of principles which have long been recognized in their individual application. The present work developes these theories in more coherent and logical form, and, it is believed, will serve to simplify the acquisition of the subject of which it treats. In conclusion, the author expresses his thanks to those whose names follow for their kind aid in obtaining illustrations: Messrs. Babb, Cook & Willard; Mr. James B. Baker; Mr. H. W. Desmond; Mr. Wilson Eyre; Messrs. Carrere & Hastings; Mr. George A. Freeman; Messrs. Howe, Hoit & Cutler; Mr. Elliott Lynch; Mr. Benjamin W. Morris; Messrs. Bruce, Price & de Silbour; Mr. George B. Excerpt from The National Character of English Architecture: The Chancellor's Essay MCMVIII Such a description would leave little room for an inquiry like the present. It sees in architectural evolution a necessary system proceeding step by step on a sequence dictated from without as new materials or new resources of science modify the constructional problem. Design, it is sometimes said, never, in the vital stages of architec tural art, is more than the effort, tentative sometimes, to roof this or span that it may happen upon beauty, but only in so far as it persuades us of its technical success, and the single significance which can reasonably be looked for in it is the significance of construction - the lucid statement in the finished work of the mechanical problem, and the means of its mechanical solution. Excerpt from Specifications for Practical Architecture: Preceded by an Essay on the Decline of Excellence in the Structure and in the Science of Modern English Buildings V. The Specifications contained in this work, are entirely of my own composition more than forty of them I have chosen from a large collection lying by me, of papers composed for works intended for execution; and the works of thirty-two of these have been carried into absolute execution, principally under my own immediate superintendence: they have there fore, of necessity, some of that precision which can alone result from the consideration of works seriously intended to be undertaken: the remaining specifications, which have indeed more of the character of elementary details than of complete works, were purposely composed for this publica tion, and are intended less as complete specifications, than for amalgama tion with others.
