This report used data for 1988-90 to compare observer and fleet effort, calculate correlations between observer and fleet catch rates for squid, perform weighted regressions of observed squid catch rates on fleet catch rates, estimate differences between observer and fleet catches of squid, and estimate amounts of albacore tuna and Pacific pomfret discarded by the commercial fleet. Flying squid, albacore tuna, and Pacific pomfret represented high, medium, and low-valued species respectively. For each specie, the study examined the relationship between the catch and catch rate records provided by observers and the landing statistics reported by the Fisheries Agency of Japan. Based on the observer data, the amount of albacore tuna and Pacific pomfret that was discarded by the commercial fishery (from June to September only) each year was estimated. As the fishery spanned a broad longitudinal range, the relationship between observer records and land statistics for flying squid was examined using three levels of geographical stratification.
