Hermosas, sensuales y, sobre todo, er?ticas, las pinturas de Gustav Klimt hablan de un mundo de opulencia y placer que parece estar a miles de a?os luz de distancia del rudo entorno posmoderno en el que vivimos ahora. Los temas que trata, alegor?as, retratos, paisajes y figuras er?ticas, no contienen pr?cticamente ninguna referencia a eventos externos, sino que tratan de crear un mundo en el que la belleza predomina sobre todo lo dem?s. El uso que hace del color y los patrones est? profundamente influenciado por el arte japon?s, el antiguo Egipto y Bizancio. Ravenna, la perspectiva plana y bidimensional de sus pinturas y la calidad con frecuencia estilizada de sus im?genes dan forma a una obra imbuida de una profunda sensualidad y en la que la figura femenina es soberana. Las primeras obras de Klimt le hicieron alcanzar el ?xito a una edad muy temprana. Gustav naci? en 1862 y consigui? una beca del estado para estudiar en la Kunstgewerbeschule (escuela de artes y oficios de Viena) a la edad de catorce a?os. Su talento como dibujante y pintor qued? de manifiesto muy pronto y en 1879 form? la K?nstlercompagnie (Compa??a de artistas) con su hermano Ernst y otro estudiante, Franz Matsch. La segunda mitad del siglo XIX fue un periodo de gran actividad en la arquitectura en Viena. En 1857, el emperador Francisco Jos? hab?a ordenado la destrucci?n de las fortificaciones que sol?an rodear el centro de la ciudad medieval. El resultado fue la Ringstrasse, un nuevo y floreciente distrito con magn?ficos edificios y hermosos parque, todo pagado por el erario p?blico. Por lo tanto, el joven Klimt y sus asociados tuvieron muchas oportunidades de mostrar su talento, y recibieron comisiones para las decoraciones de la celebraci?n de las bodas de plata del emperador Francisco Jos? y la emperatriz Elisabeth. En 1894, Matsch se march? del estudio comunal y en 1897, Klimt, junto con sus amigos m?s cercanos, renunciaron a la K?nstlerhausgenossenschaft (Sociedad cooperativa de artistas austriacos) para formar un nuevo movimiento llamado la Secesi?n, del cual fue electo presidente de manera inmediata. La Secesi?n fue un gran ?xito y en 1898 present? no una, sino dos exposiciones. El movimiento logr? ganar el suficiente dinero para comisionar su propio edificio, dise?ado por el arquitecto Joseph Maria Olbrich. Sobre la entrada estaba escrito su lema: "A cada era su arte; al arte, su libertad". M?s o menos a partir de 1897, Klimt pas? casi todos los veranos en Attersee, con la familia Fl?ge. Fueron periodos de paz y tranquilidad en los que produjo paisajes que constituyeron casi un cuarto de la totalidad de su obra. Klimt realiz? bocetos de pr?cticamente todo lo que hac?a. En ocasiones realizaba m?s de cien dibujos para una pintura, cada uno con un detalle distinto, un traje, una joya o un simple gesto. La calidad excepcional de Gustav Klimt se refleja en el hecho de que no tuvo predecesores ni verdaderos seguidores. Admir? a Rodin y a Whistler sin copiarlos servilmente, y a su vez recibi? la admiraci?n de los pintores vieneses m?s j?venes, como Egon Schiele y Oskar Kokoschka, cuya obra muestra una gran influencia de Klimt.

Broken Souths offers the first in-depth study of the diverse field of contemporary Latina/o poetry. Its innovative angle of approach puts Latina/o and Latin American poets into sustained conversation in original and rewarding ways. In addition, author Michael Dowdy presents ecocritical readings that foreground the environmental dimensions of current Latina/o poetics. Dowdy argues that a transnational Latina/o imaginary has emerged in response to neoliberalism—the free-market philosophy that underpins what many in the northern hemisphere refer to as “globalization.” His work examines how poets represent the places that have been “broken” by globalization’s political, economic, and environmental upheavals. Broken Souths locates the roots of the new imaginary in 1968, when the Mexican student movement crested and the Chicano and Nuyorican movements emerged in the United States. It theorizes that Latina/o poetics negotiates tensions between the late 1960s’ oppositional, collective identities and the present day’s radical individualisms and discourses of assimilation, including the “post-colonial,” “post-national,” and “post-revolutionary.” Dowdy is particularly interested in how Latina/o poetics reframes debates in cultural studies and critical geography on the relation between place, space, and nature. Broken Souths features discussions of Latina/o writers such as Victor Hernández Cruz, Martín Espada, Juan Felipe Herrera, Guillermo Verdecchia, Marcos McPeek Villatoro, Maurice Kilwein Guevara, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Jack Agüeros, Marjorie Agosín, Valerie Martínez, and Ariel Dorfman, alongside discussions of influential Latin American writers, including Roberto Bolaño, Ernesto Cardenal, David Huerta, José Emilio Pacheco, and Raúl Zurita.
