A growing concern in most regions of the world is the heightened incidence of criminal and violent behavior, especially in the Latin American and Caribbean Region. This study uses a new data set of crime rates for a large sample of countries to analyze the determinants of national homicide and robbery rates. The authors describe a simple model of "incentives to commit crimes" by estimating several econometric models and utilizing empirical models to draw their conclusions.

Testing and diagnosis of hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) infection is the gateway for access to both prevention and treatment services, and is a crucial component of an effective response to the hepatitis epidemic. Early identification of persons with chronic HBV or HCV infection enables them to receive the necessary care and treatment to prevent or delay progression of liver disease. Testing also provides an opportunity to link people to interventions to reduce transmission, through counselling on risk behaviors and provision of prevention commodities (such as sterile needles and syringes) and hepatitis B vaccination. These are the first WHO guidelines on testing for chronic HBV and HCV infection and complement published guidance by WHO on the prevention, care and treatment of chronic hepatitis C and hepatitis B infection. These guidelines outline the public health approach to strengthening and expanding current testing practices for HBV and HCV, and are intended for use across age groups and populations.

What do children know about work, careers, and related topics? What is the pattern of growth in values, attitudes, beliefs, and knowledge? Using quantitative and anecdotal evidence gathered from interviewing over 900 grade-school students in five New Jersey communities, the authors analyze childhood socialization to the concept of work. Existing literature on this topic focuses on the critical years of ocÂcupational choice. But Goldstein and Oldham strongly suggest that much of the child's work-related development has already occurred prior to entry into secondary school, and that "career educaÂtion" must receive increased emÂphasis during the elementary years. Their evidence corroborates the pattern of rapid progress toÂward childhood awareness of imÂportant social phenomena such as war, politics, race, gender roles, and economics. By the seventh grade, children have an awareness in these areas that approximates that of adults. Traditional stereoÂtypes concerning appropriate work roles for women continue to exist at the elementary school level. This work is a comprehensive, empirical treatment of childhood socialization to work, fitting neatÂly into the growing body of literaÂture on the socialization of the child into various political, ecoÂnomic, and social roles. Children and Work is in the sociological tradition, but the findings are preÂsented in the context of a growing body of social science research on early socialization.

Paulo Freire expõe as concepções humanizadoras, dialógicas e libertadoras dos sujeitos, mostrando-nos caminhos possíveis frente às violências presentes nas escolas. No tocante ao viés das sustentabilidades, reunimos os pressupostos de Filomena Lucia Gossler Rodrigues da Silva, Guillermo Foladori e Moacir Gadotti. Ao tratar dos eventos do cotidiano, estivemos fundamentados em Michel de Certeau. Com a técnica de Desenho-Estória (D-E) de Walter Trinca, investigamos os sentidos captados pelas expressões icônicas e textuais dos estudantes a respeito da qualidade de vida. Buscou-se entender, também, a relação existente entre a comunidade e a escola na construção de práticas coletivas identitárias e solidárias como estímulo à cidadania. Os resultados alcançados foram a promoção de tomadas de consciência, fortalecedoras da qualidade de vida, assim como propor na escola um espaço de gênese formativa para a discussão de qualidade de vida.
