"The book provides a deeper understanding of modern art in the Brazilian context, moving the focus away from the self-declared avant-gardes and towards a broad panorama of modernizing tendencies throughout the period, 1890 to 1945. The backdrop of sertão, favelas, carnival and samba - often left out of accounts that restrict readings of modernism to erudite arenas like literature, fine art or architecture - are foregrounded in an attempt to situate artistic discourses within the social and political struggles of the period. Race, class and ideological conflict are given priority as tools for deconstructing complex debates, too often taken at face value or misread as merely reflexive of European phenomena. The anthropophagic movement (Antropofagia) rates special attention in teasing out the meanings of primitivism in the Brazilian context. The book examines a range of visual cultural materials including paintings, periodicals, graphics and photographs, revealing a hidden archive that calls into question the very essence of how modernism is usually perceived in Brazil. The enduring presence of archaism and violence behind an appearance of modernity reveals itself to be not an anomaly, but rather a product of the tensions inherent to the enduring oligarchical structures of Brazilian culture and society"--

Este livro é uma amostra da recepção da tradição clássica em algumas das obras mais renomadas da literatura brasileira. Ele propõe reflexões sobre como os autores brasileiros releram e re-escreveram a cultura clássica, mas de forma significativa para seu próprio contexto cultural. Evitando as armadilhas de interpretações e comparações etnocêntricas, sugere-se aqui que a sobrevivência da tradição clássica na literatura brasileira ocorre por meio do diálogo entre a reiteração da identidade e a inauguração de diferenças fundamentais. Pós-modernidade, capitalismo e educação: a universidade na crise do projeto social moderno analisa alguns desdobramentos (da crise) da racionalidade moderna na educação, buscando compreender suas implicações para o currículo e a formação universitária no capitalismo tardio. Em linhas gerais, procura compreender e explicitar as relações "mediatas" entre o projeto filosófico, político e social da modernidade – em sua fase sólida (acumulação rígida do capital), com a "lógica curricular da universidade moderna" e o projeto filosófico, político e social da pós-modernidade, e em sua fase flexível (acumulação flexível do capital), com a "lógica curricular da universidade no capitalismo tardio". A partir disso, o primeiro capítulo do livro esboça a problemática filosófica e pedagógica implicada na investigação sobre o tema da modernidade e da pós-modernidade, com seus desdobramentos nas questões implicadas com a educação, o currículo e a formação universitária. O segundo capítulo aborda os pressupostos filosóficos fundamentais do projeto social da modernidade, que tiveram seu ápice no contexto do Iluminismo europeu (século XVIII). Descreve e analisa, sobretudo, o contexto histórico, implicado na "legitimação" desses pressupostos, os quais se fizeram presentes e determinaram os "fundamentos" (da lógica curricular e da formação acadêmica constitutiva) da universidade moderna. O terceiro capítulo tematiza a crise dessas conjecturas constitutivas da "racionalidade" moderna, evidenciando as diferentes críticas da modernidade e as novas suposições emergentes ao longo do século XX.
