Eine erste Fassung von den »Sieben Säulen der Weisheit« vollendete Lawrence 1919. Das einzige Exemplar des Manuskripts hat der Autor jedoch bei einer Zugreise verloren. Aus der Erinnerung verfaßte Lawrence bis 1920 eine zweite Version des Werkes und überarbeitete sie bis 1922. Später nahm Lawrence weitere Korrekturen an seinem Werk vor und ließ sich von Freunden überreden, eine gekürzte Fassung anzufertigen. Das Ergebnis war eine immer noch umfangreiche Version, die 1926 aufwendig gebunden und üppig illustriert mit erheblichem finanziellen Verlust für Lawrence an etwa 200 Subskribenten verkauft wurde. Um die Verluste wettzumachen, brachte Lawrence 1927 eine weiter gekürzte Version unter dem Titel »Revolt in the Desert« (Aufstand in der Wüste) für das breite Publikum heraus. Bernard Shaw und E. M. Forster sahen diese Fassung als das eigentliche Meisterwerk von T. E. Lawrence.

Die Untersuchung setzt sich kritisch mit der klassischen These eines neuen Exodus in der ältesten deuterojesajanischen Schriftprophetie (Jesaja 40–52) auseinander. Deuterojesaja war nicht als theologische Werbeschrift zum Auszug aus Babylon, sondern von vornherein als heilsprophetische Variation einer konventionellen altorientalischen Städtetheologie konzipiert. Die Erschaffung des Weges für Jakob-Israel und die Verwandlung der Wüste und des Meeres stehen im Zusammenhang der reaktivierten Königsherrschaft JHWHs auf dem Zion. Ein neuer Exodus wird lediglich in den redaktionellen Versen Jes 51,10b–11; 52,11f. nachgewiesen. Diese stellen schon einen Bezug zu protojesajanischen Texten sowie Jesaja 60–62 her. Erst in diesem Stadium sind markante Bezüge zu einer bereits nachpriesterschriftlichen Exodus-Landnahmeerzählung im Hexateuch nachweisbar. [The Desert, the Sea and the Transformation of Zion. A Critical Contextualization of the New Exodus in Isaiah 40–52] The study critically examines the classic thesis of a new exodus in the oldest Deutero-Isaiah scriptural prophecy (Isaiah 40-52). Deutero-Isaiah was not conceived as a theological advertising pamphlet about the exodus from Babylon, but from the outset as a salvation-prophetic variation of a common ancient oriental urban theology. The creation of the way for Jacob-Israel and the transformation of the desert and the sea are in the context of YHWH's reactivated kingship on Zion. A new exodus is only mentioned in the editorial verses Isaiah 51:10b–11; 52.11f. proven. These already establish a connection to proto-Isaiah texts in addition to Isaiah 60–62. Only at this stage can striking references to a post-priestly written exodus narrative in the Hexateuch be detected.

Military recruitment will become more difficult in times of demographic aging. The question arises whether demographic change will constrain the capacity of aging states like Germany to conduct foreign policy and pursue their national security interests. Since contemporary military operations still display a strong human element, particular scrutiny is given to the empirical analysis of the determinants of military propensity and military service among youth. An additional human capital projection until 2030 illustrates how the decline in the youth population will interact with trends in educational attainment and adolescent health to further complicate military recruitment in the future. A concluding review of recruiting practices in other NATO countries provides insight in best-practice policy options to reduce the military’s sensitivity to demographic change. Following this approach, the book gives prominence to a topic that has thus far been under-represented in the greater discussion of demographic change today, namely the demographic impact on international affairs and strategic calculations.
