"Avanguardia" significa rottura con il passato, rinnovamento. Eppure ogni attacco portato dai movimenti storici d'avanguardia (dal futurismo al dadaismo al surrealismo) all'"istituzione arte" ha sempre fallito. Bürger, seguendo un filo che da Kant, Schiller e Hegel conduce a Lukács e alla riflessione moderna, spiega le ragioni di questo fallimento. Grande attenzione è dedicata al contrasto inconciliabile tra Adorno e Benjamin: fautore dell'autonomia estetica come concetto basilare della modernità e unica condizione di possibilità dell'arte il primo, sostenitore dell'avanguardia come arma per superare le categorie dell'estetica idealistica e, quindi, l'autonomia dell'opera d'arte il secondo. Così, grazie a questo continuo sforzo di confronto teorico al più alto livello, l'analisi critica dei movimenti storici d'avanguardia diviene da una parte presupposto per un chiarimento della funzione sociale dell'arte nella società borghese, dall'altra pone le basi per uno sviluppo dell'estetica moderna coome teoria critica della cultura. Apparsa in prima edizione nel 1974 e subito al centro di un viacissimo dibattito internazionale, che ha investito i grandi temi della modernità, dall'impengo politico dell'arte alla teoria della letteratura e alla rifondazione dell'estetica, l'opera conserva intatta la sua attualità, oggi che all'esaurimento della spinta propulsiva delle avanguardie fa seguito quella rilettura spesso manieristica del passato e della tradizione che chiamiamo "postmoderno". E, scrive Bürger, "ciò che oggi viene dibattuto all'insegna del termine infelice di postmoderno, è un antico problema della modernità, che risuona nel famoso e famigerato hegeliano della morte dell'arte: la società borghese non possiede un'arte che le si confaccia in modo genuino, ma essa ne ha bisogno"

Parue en 1974 en Allemagne, la Théorie de l'avant-garde de Peter Bürger a suscité d'importants débats. Elle n'avait pourtant pas été traduite en France jusqu'à présent. Sa publication donne l'occasion d'interroger l'héritage des avant-gardes dites "historiques" (surréalisme, dada, constructivisme russe) dans le contexte de l'art contemporain et, plus largement, de la culture de masse postmoderne, mais aussi de rendre compte de leurs échecs, de leurs "futurs passés" comme de leur réactivation problématique. Peter Bürger construit un concept d'avant-garde caractérisé par une remise en cause durable de l'idéologie de l'autonomie esthétique et par une attaque massive contre l'institution art en tant que domaine social détaché de la pratique de la vie. Loin de composer un simple récit à propos des mouvements d'avant-garde dans leur diversité, Bürger tente de cerner les conditions de possibilité historique de leur apparition et l'unité sous-jacente de leurs démarches. S'appuyant sur l'esthétique d'Adorno et, plus largement, sur la théorie de l'école de Francfort, son livre s'inscrit dans une herméneutique critique de la culture, qui prend la mesure des bouleversements introduits par les avant-gardes, tant dans la déconstruction de la "totalité organique" des oeuvres d'art (par le montage, le collage ou le rôle dévolu au hasard) que dans la redéfinition de leur rôle politique - réconcilier utopiquement technique et esthétique, art et praxis. Les analyses que consacre Peter Bürger au concept d'oeuvre d'art, la distance qu'il prend à l'égard des thèses de Habermas ou de Benjamin, les éclairages historiques qu'il mobilise, comme son souci de distinguer l'autonomie artistique, du point de vue de son histoire et de son ancrage institutionnel, du contenu des oeuvres, font de ce livre un élément majeur pour toute approche des avant-gardes. Son examen de la situation créée par le projet inabouti des avant-gardes, sa description de ce qu'on désigne par "art contemporain" contribuent de façon décisive à la réflexion sur les pratiques artistiques d'aujourd'hui, leur rapport à l'institution art, à la culture et au marché.
