Finally, summer break arrived. I was so happy! But I didnt feel happy on Friday afternoon because I was so bored. I asked my dad if we could go camping. He said, Yes, we can. I asked my mom and my brother to join us. My mom had some promises to keep over the weekend. My brother also was not available as he would visit his friends over the weekend. I then asked my mom for her permission, and she agreed that my dad and I could go without her and my brother. She warned us to be careful. We decided to go to the mountain for three nights. I asked my dad if we could bring along our female dog. He said, Yes, it is a good idea. We packed food, water, sleeping bags, dog food, and blankets, and prepared our tent, which we bought two years ago. We then drove several hours without stopping until we reached the mountain. I helped my father set the tent. We were very tired and hungry. Immediately after eating some food, we went to sleep in our sleeping bags inside the tent.

Ina Guinto certainly does not feel welcome in her new home in Laguna, although Biboy and her father like it. While Mr. Guinto goes to work, they are left in the care of Mayang, whom Biboy likes to call “Yaya Maya.” Ina insists she is too old to have a nanny, but no one listens to her, especially when it’s about wanting to go back to Manila. Then some strange things happen: Yaya Maya talks to frogs, Papa’s bookcase turns to splinter and dust, and someone has left a note wanting Ina and her family to go away. Who is Yaya Maya? Who—or what—is behind these events? As Ina finds more answers to her questions, and more questions to her answers, will she still want to go back to the home she left in the city?

The Heart Of The Pearl Shell written by James F. Weiner and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-11-10 with Social Science categories.

For the Foi people who live on the edge of the central highlands of Papua New Guinea, the flow of pearl shells is the "heart" of their social life. The pearl shell is the exchange item that mediates the creation of their most important sexual and social roles. The Heart of the Pearl Shell analyzes a number of myths of the Foi people, elegantly bringing together significant ethnographic materials in a way that has important implications for the development of social theory in anthropology and in Melanesian studies. Scholars of semiotic-symbolic anthropology and of comparative religion will also share the author's interest in the meaning and role of mythology in Foi culture. Instead of relying on orthodox methods of Freudian or structuralist interpretation, James Weiner assumes there is a dialectical relationship between the images of Foi myth and the images of the Foi's social world. He demonstrates how each set of these images is dependent upon the other for its creation. This innovative study locates Foi social meaning in the re-creation and attempted solution of the moral dilemmas that are crystallized in mythology and other poetic usages. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. The author, an anthropologist, details the initiation process she went through to become a Maya shaman-priestess in Guatemala, including rituals, prayers, the presence of numinous forces, and the transmission of sacred knowledge. She explains the spiritual wisdom of the Maya calendar as a living entity, its cycles of time, and the significance of “the counting of the days,” which helps keep time itself alive. She examines Maya spiritual and cosmological concepts such as how the universe is shaped like a triangle over a square. She reveals the profound power of dance in Maya tradition, explaining how ritual dance halts the flow of time, reactivates primordial events, and captures vital energies that keep the Maya spiritual tradition vital and alive. Exploring other Maya secret knowledge, she also details Maya ritual attire, Maya future-telling with the calendar, the reading of the Tzi’te beans, and how the Maya communicate with ancestors through the sacred fire. Illustrating how contemporary Maya life is suffused with spiritual tradition and celebration, the author shares the teachings of the Maya from her initiate and anthropologist point of view in order to help us all learn from the ancient wisdom of their beliefs and worldview. Because, to truly understand the Maya, one must think like the Maya.
