A l’époque de la Grèce classique, le Banausos serait l’artisan, appelé par ce terme qui signifie « minable » et qui montrait le mépris des intellectuels pour les travailleurs manuels. Or, cela est une erreur car, si le terme Banausos signifie bien minable, il n’a par contre jamais désigné la catégorie sociale des artisans. C’est le seul Aristote qui a choisi ce vocable pour le réserver aux artisans, suivant en cela sa méthode habituelle qui est de fonder et hiérarchiser des groupes sociaux en leur donnant un nom qu’il inventait lui-même si aucun n’existait. L’étude des occurrences de ce terme faite dans cet ouvrage prouve qu’il était totalement ignoré des Athéniens. Le Professeur Bourriot se situe dans la lignée de sa précédente étude sur le Kalos Kagathos ; aux Kaloi Kagathoi, l’élite, on a opposé les Banausoi, notion créée de toute pièce par Aristote, reprise ensuite par les Alexandrins. Grossière erreur, l’étude des sources écrites l’atteste, et c’est ce que démontre ce livre : les artisans de la Grèce classique, à la différence des esclaves, n’ont jamais été une catégorie méprisée, ni donc méprisable ; ce ne sont pas des Banausoi au sens littéral, mais des Sophoi. Im klassischen Griechenland sei Banausos der Ausdruck für den Handwerker gewesen, was „minderwertig“ bedeute und die Verachtung der Intellektuellen für die Handarbeiter zeige. Doch diese Ansicht ist irrig, denn Banausos bedeutet zwar „minderwertig“, bezeichnete aber niemals die soziale Kategorie der Handwerker. Allein Aristoteles hat dieses Wort für die Handwerker reserviert und folgte damit seiner gewohnten Methode, gesellschaftliche Gruppen zu gründen und zu hierarchisieren, indem er ihnen, wenn kein Name für sie existierte, einen selbst erfundenen Namen gab. Die hier vorgelegte Untersuchung der Stellen, an denen der Ausdruck Banausos vorkommt, zeigt, dass dieser den Athenern völlig unbekannt war. Félix Bourriot folgt dem in seiner früheren Studie über den Kalos Kagathos (1995, Spudasmata Bd. 58) eingeschlagenen Weg: den Kaloi Kagathoi, der Elite, stellte man die Banausoi gegenüber, eine von Aristoteles geschaffene und später von den Alexandrinern aufgegriffene Bezeichnung. Ein grober Irrtum, wie das Studium der Quellentexte bezeugt und das vorliegende Buch beweist: Im klassischen Griechenland waren die Handwerker – im Unterschied zu den Sklaven – nie eine verachtete oder verächtliche Kategorie; sie sind keine Banausoi im wörtlichen Sinn, sondern Sophoi.
