Seine Leistung erscheintumso bemerkenswerter in Anbetracht der Tatsache, dass unglückliche Umstände ihnzwingen, sein Drama in höchstens fünf Wochen zu schreiben2; es sind jeneWochen, in denen Büchner auf Grund seiner zuvor verfassten und in Umlaufgebrachten Flugschrift Der hessische Landbote in das Visier der Polizei gerät undnur unter großen Anstrengungen einer Verhaftung entgeht. Die endgültigeAusarbeitung des Danton erfolgt schließlich von Mitte Januar bis zum 21. Februar1835. Doch laufen seine Studien zur Geschichte der Französischen Revolution, inwelche die Dramenhandlung zeitlich eingebettet ist, bereits wesentlich früher an:Schon zu Beginn des Jahres 1834 befasst sich Büchner eingehend mit historischenWerken zur Französischen Revolution, wie aus dem Brief an die Braut im Märzdesselben Jahres hervorgeht:Ich studierte die Geschichte der Revolution. Ich fühlte mich wie zernichtet unter demgräßlichen Fatalismus der Geschichte. Ich finde in der Menschennatur eine entsetzlicheGleichheit, in den menschlichen Verhältnissen eine unabwendbare Gewalt, Allen und Keinemverliehen. Karl Georg Buchner (1813-1837) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller, Naturwissen-schaftler und Revolutionar. die Gesellschaft fur Menschenrechte, eine Geheimorganisation nach franzosischem Vorbild, deren Ziel ein Umsturz der politischen Verhaltnisse war. 1835 verfasste er nach eigenen Angaben innerhalb von funf Wochen Dantons Tod. 1834 wurde der Hessische Landbote, den Buchner verfasst hatte, in Druck gelegt. Es handelt sich um eine Flugschrift, die die hessische Landbevolkerung zur Revolution gegen die Unterdruckung aufrief. Buchner wurde dafur vernommen, aber nicht verhaftet. Im selben Jahr floh er nach Strassburg. Aufgrund seiner eingereichten Arbeit und der daran anschliessenden Probevorlesung wurde Georg Buchner die Doktorwurde der Universitat Zurich verliehen. Büchner hat selbst einige identifikatorische Momente ins Stück einge-baut, wie die Verkürzung Dantons Vornamens von George-Jacques auf Georg und ein Zitat aus seinem bekannten Fatalismus-Brief, das er Danton aussprechen lässt. Der Danton Büch-ners ist von dem historischen Danton sehr verschieden. Da Büchner aber diese große histori-sche Persönlichkeit als Hauptfigur gewählt hat, stellen sich auch viele Fragen zum Beispiel nach der Beziehung zwischen Text und Geschichte: Warum also ist das Drama zu diesem bestimmten Zeitpunkt - die dreizehn Tage vor Dantons Hinrichtung (24.März bis 5.April 1794) - angesiedelt?
