During the recent financial crisis, resolution mechanisms proved to be insufficient to wind down systemically important financial institutions. Especially the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers led to severe macroeconomic instability. Afterwards, national and supranational authorities implemented new regulations for preventing and managing bank failures, among them the Single Resolution Mechanism (SRM) in the European Banking Union. The failure of Banco Popular in June 2017 put the SRM to the first test. As the resolution mechanism apparently worked smoothly, and did not contaminate other banks or even the non-banking industry, the question arises whether the resolution mechanism has consequently become more credible for bank investors. By analyzing market reactions to the Banco Popular bail-in, the author primarily aims to answer this question. Hypothetically, if investors perceive the bail-in as a credible commitment by the Single Resolution Board, the implicit insurance should cease. For this reason, investors would demand higher, risk-reflecting interest rates, impairing the bank’s profitability. Therefore, in the case that this is the dominant effect, a bank’s share price should fall. In this book: - Single Resolution Mechanism; - European Banking Union; - financial industry regulations; - bail-in and bail-out; - too big to fail banks; - Banco Popular

In this paper, we develop a model incorporating the impact of financial inclusion to study the implications of introducing a retail central bank digital currency (CBDC). CBDCs in developing countries (unlike in advanced countries) have the potential to bank large unbanked populations and boost financial inclusion which can increase overall lending and reduce bank disintermediation risks. Our model captures two key channels. First, CBDC issuance can increase bank deposits from the previously unbanked by incentivizing the opening of bank accounts for access to CBDC wallets (offsetting potential flows from deposits to CBDCs among those already banked). Second, data from CBDC usage allows for the building of credit to reduce credit-risk information asymmetry in lending. We find that CBDC can increase overall lending if (1) bank deposit liquidity risk is low, (2) the size and relative wealth of the previously unbanked population is large, and (3) CBDC is valuable to households as a means of payment or for credit-building. CBDC can still be optimal for household welfare even when overall lending decreases as households benefit from the value of using CBDC for payments, CBDC provides an alternative "safe" savings vehicle, and CBDC generates greater surplus in lending by reducing credit-risk information asymmetry. Most countries are considering a "two-tier" CBDC model, where central banks issue CBDC to commercial banks which in turn distribute them to consumers. If non-bank payment system providers can distribute CBDC, fewer funds will flow into deposit accounts from the unbanked because a bank account is no longer needed to access CBDC. If CBDC data is shareable with banks, those without bank accounts can still build credit and access lower interest rate loans. This design is optimal for welfare if the gains from greater access to CBDC outweigh the contraction in lending.

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: Very Good, Mekelle University, language: English, abstract: The objective of the study was to compare the financial performance of commercial Banks by using their average ratio in terms of profitability, liquidity, efficiency, and solvency. In this study by using excel analyzed information was presented by statistical measures like graphs and tables. Both the trend and comparative financial performance analysis approaches were used. Five years audited financial reports from 2005 to 2009 of the commercial banks were taken for comparison purpose. Those commercial banks taken for comparison were Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Dashen Bank Share Company, Bank of Abyssinia, United Bank, Wegagen Bank, and Nib International Bank. Year of establishment, amount of capital reserve, and number of branches are taken as a criterion for selecting these commercial banks for analysis purpose. In addition to data gathered from secondary sources, unstructured interview was conducted on problem and prospects related to the financial performance of commercial banks and the responses were presented. The respective ratios of each bank are compared with the average ratios of the six commercial banks taken for the study. Then trend analyses of six commercial banks taken in this study are presented by using the above ratios. In both the financial performance analysis approaches i.e., the trend and comparative analysis, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) showed good performance in financial ratios of Profitability, Liquidity, and Solvency ratio, but Bank of Abyssinia(BOA) has showed weak performance in all above explained financial ratios. From this, it is concluded that CBE was profitable and functionally efficient and BOA is less profitable and the earning capacity of the bank is weak. Therefore, in order to improve profitability the management of BOA must increase management efficiency by reducing administrative expenses to the best possible level, efficiently control costs and utilize customers deposit, dispose of the assets which are not contributing for the profitability of the banks and work to maximize the overall profitability of the bank through investing in profitable avenue.

In the United States, we now take our ability to pay with plastic for granted. In other parts of the world, however, the establishment of a "credit-card economy" has not been easy. In countries without a history of economic stability, how can banks decide who should be given a credit card? How do markets convince people to use cards, make their transactions visible to authorities, assume the potential risk of fraud, and pay to use their own money? Why should merchants agree to pay extra if customers use cards instead of cash? In Plastic Money, Akos Rona-Tas and Alya Guseva tell the story of how banks overcame these and other quandaries as they constructed markets for credit cards in eight postcommunist countries. We know how markets work once they are built, but this book develops a unique framework for understanding how markets are engineered from the ground up—by selecting key players, ensuring cooperation, and providing conditions for the valuation of a product. Drawing on extensive interviews and fieldwork, the authors chronicle how banks overcame these hurdles and generated a desire for their new product in the midst of a transition from communism to capitalism.

Historians of our financial system will record this as an age of deregulation and bank mergers. Deregulation, a cornerstone of President Reagan's Administration, resulted in federal and state legislation that contributed to increased competition for financial services and increased merger activity. During the 1981-1986 period, there were 2,139 mergers in banking and finance, accounting for 16 percent of total merger activity.l More mergers occurred in banking and finance than in any other industry. Because of these bank mergers, there are vast amounts of data avail able for scholarly research. This book presents some results of that research which will be of interest to academics, bankers, investors, legislators, and regulators. The book consists of ten articles, and it is divided into three parts. Part 1: National and Regional Bank Mergers gives a broad perspective of merger activity. The first article by Peter S. Rose compared the growth of bank holding companies that merged with those that did not merge. One conclusion of his study was that banks planning mergers tended to be aggressively managed and were often beset by problems, such as low profitability or declining loan quality. Mergers were one solution to their problems. But he found no solid evidence that mergers resulted in greater profitability or reduced risk. He also observed that acquiring banks did not seem to grow faster than those choosing not to merge.
