There is an urgent need to address the problems experienced by rapidly growing cities in the developing world. Recently, innovative approaches have focused on community-based organizations (CBOs) in setting up self-help and participatory programmes. Using the experience of CBOs in Manila, this book emphasizes the external conditions that influence patterns of collective action within communities and addresses issues such as the local political economy and the communities' place within the global economy.

This book presents a unified view of the physicochemical origin of the mechanical behaviour of gases, simple solids and liquids, suspensions, polymers, emulsions, foams, and granular materials, along with techniques for measuring that behaviour. Besides molecular materials in all their classical gaseous, solid, or liquid states, we deal daily with a number of other materials made of coarser elements such as polymers, cells, grains, bubbles, and droplets. They take on the familiar appearance of paints, inks, cements, muds, foams, emulsions, toothpastes, gels, etc. These materials exhibit complex structures and sometimes amazing types of mechanical behaviour, often intermediate between those of a simple liquid and a simple solid. From a practical standpoint, the aim is to analyze their internal evolution (aging, restructuring, phase separation, etc.), then to formulate these materials in accordance with the desired properties, and thereby devise new materials. With that aim in mind, it is crucial to understand how these materials deform or flow, depending on the interactions and structures formed by the elements they contain. This book is intended for students as well as more advanced researchers in mechanics, physics, chemistry, and biology. The mathematical formalism is reduced in order to focus on physical explanations.

The Purpose Of The Past written by Gordon S. Wood and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-03-13 with History categories.

An erudite scholar and an elegant writer, Gordon S. Wood has won both numerous awards and a broad readership since the 1969 publication of his widely acclaimed The Creation of the American Republic. With The Purpose of the Past, Wood has essentially created a history of American history, assessing the current state of history vis-à-vis the work of some of its most important scholars-doling out praise and scorn with equal measure. In this wise, passionate defense of history's ongoing necessity, Wood argues that we cannot make intelligent decisions about the future without understanding our past. Wood offers a master's insight into what history-at its best-can be and reflects on its evolving and essential role in our culture.

Metropolitan Democracies written by Bernard Jouve and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-04 with Political Science categories.

Originally published in 2005. Citizen involvement - and the concept of partnership - in urban governance has long been a major issue in the transformation of local democracy. The move from delegated to participative forms of local government has, in principle, profound consequences for governance at the scale of cities. However, it is clear that partnership and participation are interpreted in many different ways, according to the traditions of government in different countries. This volume brings together the experiences of three countries in which very different approaches to participation are evident: Canada, France and the United Kingdom. By comparing and reflecting on these countries' approaches and the resulting changes in governance, it provides an in-depth analysis of the intentions and effects of involving citizens in policy making. It also highlights innovative new forms of partnership which are emerging within metropolitan areas at a local level.

This book is about the creation of a major American business, the highway construction industry. In the 1890s such an industry could scarcely be said to exist; within a generation, by the mid-1920s, highway building and all its ancillary activities had become one of the nation's greatest industries. This multi-faceted volume tells how the appallingly bad interurban highways of 19th-century USA came to be paved when the problem of financing was finally addressed after an extended campaign by diverse interest groups. Successive chapters deal with the early phases of waterbound crushed stone macadam, the hand tool and horse-powered machinery developed to build and maintain such highways, gradually giving place to steam powered machinery which lowered the cost and speeded the pace of construction. Other chapters recount the many difficult problems of contractors estimating costs to submit winning bids and learning to achieve quality production with such novel materials as asphalt and concrete. The volume fills a surprising void in the history of highway paving as very little has been written on the problems confronting highway contractors and the state engineers who supervised them. "Highly recommended." -- H.R. Grant, Clemson University, CHOICE Magazine "Drawing on extensive historical research in engineering journals, industry publications, and road-building manuals, Holley explores the multiple factors that comprised this highway revolution. Holley's account of the highway revolution is at its strongest when he is relating tales of technical innovation, pushed forward by highway workers seeking some labor-saving device." -- Michael R. Ferin, Technology and Culture
