With critical texts by Carlotta Cossutta, a precarious researcher in political philosophy, who works on feminism and queer theories in and out of academia, and Elle Stanger, a queer person who writes sex education, short stories and advice columns and works to reduce shame and harm related to sexuality and touch, B.A.D. is more than a visual masterpiece. These women embrace nudity on their own terms; they love and cherish their bodies. Many of them are politically active, and all have strong opinions and give back to their communities on a daily basis. Rather than trying to find a single, one-dimensional answer to the definition of female and non-binary empowerment, B.A.D. (Beautiful And Determined) showcases a wide variety of positive and inspirational examples. Having previously worked in street and commercial photography, we felt the need to celebrate the life of those who hold an important place in our hearts and minds; women whose lifestyle is fierce and passionate, who have something to say and who are a step ahead of the typical idea of a model. This project was later brought to Europe where it continued to develop. The collected material is both powerful and diverse; it only seemed natural to bring it all together in a book: B.A.D. was born. This study argues that twentieth-century American women writers' textual representations of female beauty generally recognize a link between beauty standards and aesthetic ideology, exploring female beauty as a symptom of prevailing ideas about art and esthetics. Female beauty, in their texts, is not merely an issue of whether a female character is pretty or not; it is an expression of the controlling discourses negotiated by character, text, and author. In this study, therefore, the women writers' texts are read after interchapters outlining their key cultural and literary contexts. Revising Paul de Man's method of exploring scenes of reading, this study focuses on scenes of beauty in which a character, narrator, or speaker negotiates ideas about beauty. The author pairs Euro-American and African American women writers across the century in three generations: H.D. and Zora Neale Hurston; Gwendolyn Brooks and Sylvia Plath; and Toni Morrison and Louis Gluck. As such, this study offers a landmark black/white dialogue on female beauty in twentieth-century American culture and literature. Scenes of beauty in the texts of these writers suggest multiple feminine aesthetics in twentieth-century American writing, unified in their negotiation of the aesthetic ideologies embodied in female beauty.

Evolutionary aesthetics is the attempt to understand the aesthetic judgement of human beings and their spontaneous distinction between "beauty" and "ugliness" as a biologically adapted ability to make important decisions in life. The hypothesis is - both in the area of "natural beauty" and in sexuality, with regard to landscape preferences, but also in the area of "artificial beauty" (i.e. in art and design) - that beauty opens up fitness opportunities, while ugliness holds fitness risks. In this book, this adaptive view of aesthetics is developed theoretically, presented on the basis of numerous examples, and its consequences for evolutionary anthropology are illuminated.
