Davanti al cosciente valore umano della sua arte e al dovere sentito come un comando, di rendere di pubblico dominio la ricchezza del suo animo, Beethoven ebbe la percezione di ciò che occorreva agli uomini per trovare un'ora di raccoglimento; un punto di richiamo e di contatto. Fatto meraviglioso questo del genio che conosce, che sa la necessità della propria creazione, più imperiosa d'una guerra, per la conquista d'una coscienza superiore, d'una elevazione e d'un conforto a traverso i secoli. Non è vanagloria, è suggello divino! Eppure mai lo potremo percepire come assolvo; sebbene soltanto in relazione al nostro tempo, al nostro grado di cultura, che decideranno anche del nostro tributo di devozione e di comprensione. Le feste beethoveniane del 1927 furono d'un significato più alto che nell'anniversario della nascita (1870), perché di più vasto consenso. L'appello di tutto il mondo civile fu ora più diretto all'ammirazione dell'eroe uscito vittorioso dal proprio disperato destino. Ma questo omaggio universale fu assai più che semplice ammirazione: fu il sentimento di profonda devozione, che in ogni individuo suscita il nome di Beethoven. Più grande di significato che dopo la guerra del 1870, perché la distruzione, il flagello e il dolore furono immensurabili! E la necessita che ognuno ha sentito di non rimanersene silenzioso o estraneo al ritorno della data memorabile é forse, senza saperlo, senza avvertirlo, l'avvicinamento di cui ogni uomo ha bisogno; è la tenerezza fraterna ricacciata in fondo al cuore; smarrita, ma non perduta, non morta! Nel desiderio che oggi è in tanti d'una nuova ascesa, d'una vita nuova, si delineano più netti i valori cui Beethoven rimase fedele e che lo sostennero nel duro glorioso cammino. Si comprende l'atteggiamento fondamentale del suo spirito: Forza! Ecco la morale degli uomini, ed è anche la mia! Soprattutto la nostra epoca, aperta a tante speranze e a tante aspirazioni, ha bisogno del suo ammonimento: spiriti forti e vigorosi che sappiano flagellare i traditori del umanità, il falso e il disonesto, per spingere gli uomini su quella via ascendente la cui cima che Egli raggiunse attraverso il suo martirio ed suoi trionfi.
