Luigi Pirandello raccoglie con il titolo "Novelle per un anno" i 256 racconti pubblicati nel corso degli anni sul Corriere della Sera. Il titolo voleva indicare la possibilit�, per il lettore, di leggere una novella al giorno e di comprendere, cos�, l'assurdit� dell'esistenza. Ognuno di noi, infatti, crede di vivere in modo pieno e reale, mentre � prigioniero della propria forma: � il contrasto tra vita e forma, appunto. La forma � costituita dalle convenzioni sociali, dalle inclinazioni di ciascuno di noi che ci impediscono appieno di vivere e che, dunque, rappresentano le maschere che ogni individuo � costretto ad indossare per poter appartenere alla societ�. La vita, invece, � movimento continuo, un fluire, un essere incandescente, un non fissarsi in alcuna forma.Molto spesso, le novelle pirandelliane rappresentano il primo abbozzo per riprendere poi trame e personaggi nei contesti pi� ampi dei suoi romanzi e dei suoi pezzi di teatro. L'insieme delle novelle contiene, nella loro esemplarit� sostanziale e sintetica, i temi dei romanzi e delle opere teatrali ma anche un Pirandello immerso nell'ultima fase della sua produzione letteraria, quella dei "miti".L'esposizione di un evento singolare fornisce all'autore l'occasione di esprimere le tematiche legate al dramma dell'esistenza. Un fatto oppure un avvenimento anche accidentale o poco importante costringe i protagonisti alla riflessione sulla vita. Durante l'esposizione della storia, essi si ritrovano spesso in un modo o nell'altro in uno stato di assoluta impotenza. Si tratta spesso di personaggi con problemi economici e familiari, che vivono in condizioni molte volte disumane, tematiche conosciute bene dall'autore. Nelle novelle di Pirandello troviamo inoltre il pensiero dell'autore sulla questione sociale, inclusa nella visione tragica della vita. Vede l'uomo come una creatura smarrita, che cerca la verit� e la luce ma non pu� arrivarvi.
