The Betrachtungen uber einige Gegenstande der Elementargeometrie marks the beginning of a life-long programme devoted to the re-organisation of geometry, and mathematics in general, according to Bolzanos own far-reaching methodological principles. Rejecting the concepts of motion, and of the plane, in the first part he proposes proofs of the die ersten Lehrsatze von Dreiecken und Parallellinien based only on his radical, and largely original second part: einer kunftig aufzustellenden Theorie der geraden Linie. The first main part of the Beytrage zu einer begrundeteren Darstellung der Mathematik is devoted to the nature of mathematics and its proper classification. There is an unusually abstract definition of mathematics as eine Wissenschaft ... die von den allgemeinen Gesetzten (Formen) handelt, nach welchen sich diese Dinge in ihrem Daseyn richten (I, .8). The second part develops the methodological principles introduced in the Betrachtungen in greater detail and introduces Bolzanos idea that, in dem Inbegriffe aller wahren Urtheile herrscht ein gewisser Objectiver, von unserer zufalligen Subjectiven Anerkennung derselben unabhangiger Zusammenhang. (II, . 2) This relation [Abfolge] was to become an important theme of his famous later work 'Wissenschaftslehre! (1837). An Appendix criticises Kants theory of the construction of mathematical concepts through pure intuition. German description: Bolzanos Betrachtungen uber einige Gegenstande der Elementargeometrie bilden den Ausgangspunkt fur sein Programm einer Neubegrundung der Geometrie und der gesamten Mathematik, das ihn bis zu seinem Lebensende beschaftigte und fur das er weitreichende methodologische Prinzipien entwickelte. Zu diesen Prinzipien gehort die Regel, dass die Evidenz eines Satzes nie seinen Beweis ersetzen kann und dass sich ein Beweis keiner fremdartigen Mittelbegriffe bedienen darf. So hat insbesondere der Begriff der Bewegung, den sogar Kant zur Geometrie zahlte, in einem geometrischen Beweis nichts verloren. In Teil I beweist Bolzano die ersten Lehrsatze von Dreiecken und Parallellinien allein auf der Grundlage einer kunftig aufzustellenden Theorie der geraden Linie. In Teil I der Beytrage zu einer begrundeteren Darstellung der Mathematik behandelt Bolzano den Begriff und die Einteilung der Mathematik. In Teil II werden die neuen methodologischen Prinzipien, die in den Betrachtungen eingefordert und kurz angedeutet wurden, ausfuhrlich dargestellt. In diesem Zusammenhang entwickelt Bolzano auch erstmals seine Idee vom objektiven Zusammenhang unter allen wahren Urteilen. Die diesem Zusammenhang zugrundeliegende Relation der Abfolge bildet ein zentrales Thema seiner Wissenschaftslehre (1837) und spielt in fast allen wichtigen Werken Bolzanos eine tragende Rolle.
