Die Studie verfolgt das Ziel, das geschriebene Alltagsdeutsch in der neueren Sprachgeschichte als sprachliche Normallage zu beschreiben, deren Entwicklungen die Tendenzen der Gegenwartssprache erst verstehbar machen. Es wird erstmals der Versuch unternommen, auf breiter Materialbasis für das gesamte deutsche Sprachgebiet Gebrauchsnormen der Schriftsprache routinierter wie unroutinierter Schreiberinnen und Schreiber zu ermitteln. Grundlage der sprachlichen Analysen sind Texte privater Auswandererkorrespondenz, ein bislang kaum beachteter Quellentyp, der an Umfang, Nähe zur konzeptionellen Mündlichkeit sowie regionaler und sozialer Variation in der Geschichte des Neuhochdeutschen vor dem 20. Jahrhundert seinesgleichen sucht. Gestützt auf die Einzelanalysen, insbesondere zur Grammatik, Lexik und Graphie des Alltagsdeutschen im 19. Jahrhundert, wird für einen Perspektivenwechsel der sprachwissenschaftlichen Forschung zum Neuhochdeutschen plädiert: »Sprachgeschichte von unten« appelliert zum einen an eine stärkere Berücksichtigung des Sprachgebrauchs der Bevölkerungsmehrheit in der Sprachgeschichtsforschung. Zum anderen wird die Notwendigkeit unterstrichen, Geschichte und Gegenwart einer modernen Kultursprache von ihrem soziokommunikativen Fundament der Alltagssprache aus zu beschreiben und zu erklären.
