'Still seen as the classic games collection' – English Chess Federation 'It is a work of genius' – The Compulsive Reader One of the most important chess books ever written, reissued in celebration of a chess genius, Bobby Fischer. The American takes the reader through 60 of his games, describing his thoughts, the intricacies behind his and his opponent's strategies, the tactical justification of moves and the psychological battle in each one. You'll find beautifully simple positional play by out-of-this-world combinations that are just breathtaking. Fischer played nearly all of these games as a grandmaster so they are at the very highest level, but his lucid commentary makes every move and idea both accessible and understandable, meaning that every player will learn huge amounts from this book. It is an essential for each chess enthusiast, competitor and professional alike. The controversial alterations that were made to Bobby Fischer's words in the last edition have been omitted in this book, so only the author's own words are expressed, giving a true insight into one of the most gifted, troubled and controversial minds of the 20th century.

This is the only book ever written entirely by Bobby Fischer. It is not to be confused with other books with similar names that were written by other authors. Here is the blurb on the original dust jacket, as published in 1959: THERE ARE 34 games in this book. The 13 from the U.S. Championship Tournament of 1957-58 and the prize-winning "Game of the Century" from the Third Rosenwald Trophy Tournament are penetratingly analyzed by Bobby Fischer, whose annotations provide invaluable instructions to the chess player of either average or advanced ability. In addition, this book includes the scores of Bobby Fischer's 20 games from the 1958 Portoroz Interzonal Tournament in which he played against the world's elite in chess, among them Tal, Gligorich, Petrosyan, and Bronstein. The games in this book reveal Bobby Fischer's brilliance in middle and end-game strategy, and also the latest and soundest treatments of popular openings-in particular, the Sicilian and King's Indian defenses. By playing these games over, the reader will become familiar with the patterns of the latest and soundest lines in chess, and will automatically begin to make stronger moves in his own games. At the age of fifteen, Bobby Fischer was the youngest international grandmaster of all time. He lives in Brooklyn, was a junior at Erasmus Hall High School, and looking forward to the 1959 Candidates' Tournament, the winner of which challenges Mikhail Botvinnik for the world championship. Was Bobby Fischer the Greatest Player Ever? The question often asked is: Was Bobby Fischer the Greatest Player Ever? It is clear that Fischer was better than any player who preceded him, including Capablanca who, according to Professor Elo in his book "The Rating of Chess Players, Past and Present" ISBN 0923891277, was the greatest player prior to Fischer. However, Capablanca was only slightly better overall than his contemporaries, Lasker and Alekhine. Elo rated Capablanca at 2725 followed by Lasker and Botvinnik tied with 2720 and then Alekhine at 2690. The question now is: Was Fischer better than his successors, Garry Kasparov, Anatoly Karpov, Anand and Topalov? The answer usually given is that there is no comparison. Kasparov was only slightly better than Karpov. In fact, over their five matches for the World Chess Championship over a period of six years, their score was almost dead even, with Kasparov ahead by only 68-66 in the 134 games that they played. Now compare this to the score of 12 - 7 in games actually played in the Fischer-Spassky Match. Not only was Fischer much better, but Spassky was without doubt the second best player in the world, as compared to most other eras when there was and still is great doubt as to who was the second best player.

"The years after the Second World War saw international chess dominated by the Soviets [Mikhail Moiseyevich] Botvinnik, [Vasily Vasilyevich] Smyslov, [Mikhail] Tal, [Tigran] Petrosian and then [Boris] Spassky held the world crown, treating it as if it were almost an integral part of their country s heritage. There were occasional flashes of brilliance in the West - [Samuel] Reshevsky, [Miguel] Najdorf, and later [Bent] Larsen but no one really mounted a serious challenge to the Russian hegemony. Then, in the mid-1950s, a lone genius from Brooklyn emerged. Obsessed with chess, all his waking hours became devoted to finding truth on the 64 squares. It was an unrelenting, sometimes frustrating quest, but he persevered, eventually emerging as perhaps the greatest natural chess talent ever. Now, for the first time, every single one of his tournament and match games is presented with insightful explanations and analysis. Almost 1,000 annotated games are supplemented by crosstables of every major tournament and match in which Fischer participated, dozens of archival photographs, along with brief comments and observations putting the play of the great champion into historical perspective."--Publisher description
