The so-called ‘’shorter’’ Amitabha Sutra has been and is a foundation of spirituality for millions of Buddhist believers throughout the ages. The Sutra describes the magnificent Buddhist “heaven,” the Pure Land, where conditions are perfect for the practice of the Buddhist path. The sutra also describes the method for being reborn to that land, namely mindfulness of its Buddha, Amitabha. Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua’s accompanying commentary amplifies the text and explains its main concepts by providing many interesting anecdotes involving the Buddha and his disciples. This volume, combining the Sutra with Master Hua’s commentary, succeeds not only in introducing the practice and thought of Pure Land Buddhism, also referred to as Mahayana Buddhism, but effectively presents a lucid introduction to this Buddhism as it is practiced today.

It also elaborates on the twelve great vows the Medicine Buddha made when he was a bodhisattva. This translation is accompanied by the Chinese version, as well as by the pinyin pronunciation of the Chinese characters. In this respect, this book covers a tradition of crucial importance in Buddhism.

A collection of the most prominent sutras given by Buddha Gautama from the Mahayana tradition. VOLUME I includes the following sutras: 1. THE HEART SUTRA(sanskrit: Prajnaparamita-Hridayam) is a condensed recension of the Large Heart Sutra which was rendered into Chinese in the year 400 AD by the famous Indian scholar, the Venerable Kumarajiva. It is primarily intended for memorizing, and is believed to protect the aspirant who knows it by heart. Even to this day the Heart Sutra is used as a protective spell or charm by Buddhists of Tibet, China, and Japan, monks and laymen alike. 2. THE DIAMOND SUTRA(sanskrit: Vajracchedikā-Prajñāpāramitā-sūtra) is a well-known Mahayana Buddhist text from the Prajnaparamita that emphasizes the practice of non-abiding and non-attachment. The Diamond Sutra is also one of the most influential sutras in East Asia, and it is particularly prominent within Zen tradition, along with the Heart Sutra. 3. MEDICINE BUDDHA SUTRA(sanskrit: Bhaisajayaguru-Vaidurya-Prabhasa Tathagata-sūtra) is a Mahayana Buddhist text that narrates how the Buddha, in response to Manjusri Bodhisattva's request, spoke to highly cultivated monastics, bodhisattvas, kings, and magistrates concerning the meritorious virtues of the Medicine Buddha, and detailed the twelve great vows that the Medicine Buddha made when he was a bodhisattva. This sutra emphasizes the liberation of sentient beings from illnesses, suffering, disasters, and misery, as well as the acquisition of prosperity and happiness in this lifetime. 4. INFINITE LIFE SUTRA(sanskrit: Bhaisajayaguru-Vaidurya-Prabhasa Tathagata-sūtra) is a Mahayana Buddhist text that narrates how the Buddha, in response to Manjusri Bodhisattva's request, spoke to highly cultivated monastics, bodhisattvas, kings, and magistrates concerning the meritorious virtues of the Medicine Buddha, and detailed the twelve great vows that the Medicine Buddha made when he was a bodhisattva. This sutra emphasizes the liberation of sentient beings from illnesses, suffering, disasters, and misery, as well as the acquisition of prosperity and happiness in this lifetime. 5. THE LOTUS SUTRA(sanskrit: Saddharma-Puṇḍarīka-sūtra) is one of the most popular and influential Mahayana texts, and the basis on which the Tiantai, Tendai, Cheontae, and Nichiren schools of Buddhism were established. This text is known for its extensive instruction on the concept and usage of skillful means - the seventh paramita or perfection of a Bodhisattva - mostly in the form of parables. It is also one of the first sutras to use the term 'Mahayana' (Great Vehicle) Buddhism.

The Lotus Sutra written by and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-14 with Religion categories.

The Lotus Sutra is regarded as one of the world's great religious scriptures and most influential texts. It's a seminal work in the development of Buddhism throughout East Asia and, by extension, in the development of Mahayana Buddhism throughout the world. Taking place in a vast and fantastical cosmic setting, the Lotus Sutra places emphasis on skillfully doing whatever is needed to serve and compassionately care for others, on breaking down distinctions between the fully enlightened buddha and the bodhisattva who vows to postpone salvation until all beings may share it, and especially on each and every being's innate capacity to become a buddha. Gene Reeves's new translation appeals to readers with little or no familiarity with technical Buddhist vocabulary, as well as long-time practitioners and students. In addition, this remarkable volume includes the full "threefold" text of this classic.

Introduction To The Lotus Sutra written by Yoshiro Tamura and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-15 with Philosophy categories.

The Lotus Sutra--one of the most popular Buddhist classics--is here accessibly introduced by one of its most eminent scholars. "Soon after entering university in December of 1943, I was sent to the front as a student soldier. I wondered if I were allowed to bring but a single book on the trip, possibly to my death, which would I want to bring. It was the Lotus Sutra" -- from the author's Preface. Having developed a lifelong appreciation of the Lotus Sutra -- even carrying a dog-eared copy with him through service in World War II -- Yoshiro Tamura sought to author an introduction to this beloved work of Buddhist literature. Tamura wanted it to be different than other basic explorations of the text; his introduction would be plain-spoken, relevant and sensitive to modern concerns, and well-informed by contemporary scholarship. He succeeded marvelously with Introduction to the Lotus Sutra, which Gene Reeves -- Tamura's student and translator of the popular English edition of The Lotus Sutra -- translates and introduces in English for the first time here. Tackling issues of authenticity in the so-called "words of Buddha," the influence of culture and history on the development of the Lotus Sutra, and the sutra's role in Japanese life, Introduction to the Lotus Sutra grounds this ancient work of literature in the real, workaday world, revealing its continued appeal across the ages.

Some 2000 years ago Buddhism experienced a major reformation through a movement called the Mahayana, or "Great Vehicle," which dominated religious through in much of Asia for many centuries and still exerts considerable influence. The basic Mahayana texts, sermons ascribed to the Buddha and called "sutras" in Sanskrit, discussed the "perfect wisdom." The "Large Sutra on Perfect Wisdom" took shape between 50 and 2000 A.D. in southern India during one of the most momentous outbursts of religious creativity in human history.
