Gravity interpretation involves inversion of data into models, but it is more. Gravity interpretation is used in a “holistic” sense going beyond “inversion”. Inversion is like optimization within certain a priori assumptions, i.e., all anticipated models lie in a limited domain of the a priori errors. No source should exist outside the anticipated model volume, but that is never literally true. Interpretation goes beyond by taking “outside” possibilities into account in the widest sense. Any neglected possibility carries the danger of seriously affecting the interpretation. Gravity interpretation pertains to wider questions such as the shape of the Earth, the nature of the continental and oceanic crust, isostasy, forces and stresses, geol- ical structure, nding useful resources, climate change, etc. Interpretation is often used synonymously with modelling and inversion of observations toward models. Interpretation places the inversion results into the wider geological or economic context and into the framework of science and humanity. Models play a central role in science. They are images of phenomena of the physical world, for example, scale images or metaphors, enabling the human mind to describe observations and re- tionships by abstract mathematical means. Models served orientation and survival in a complex, partly invisible physical and social environment.

The interaction of the environment with a moving body is called ?localized? if it has been found or assumed that the force or/and thermal influence of the environment on each body surface point is independent and can be determined by the local geometrical and kinematical characteristics of this point as well as by the parameters of the environment and body?environment interactions which are the same for the whole surface of contact.Such models are widespread in aerodynamics and gas dynamics, covering supersonic and hypersonic flows, and rarefied gas flows. They describe the influence of light on a body, and are used for modelling penetration of solids into metals and soils, etc.Localized Interaction Theory (LIT) studies various theoretical and applied problems using the most general description of the influence of the environment on the body. This makes it possible to integrate results obtained from different models and to create new universal methods that can be used for various conditions, even if the description of the real interaction model is unknown. Such a unified approach to the problems of analysis, calculation and optimization of the integral characteristics of bodies moving in different media is the main content of this book which is the first monograph on this subject. Preface During the past two decades, a significant international research exchange has taken place in order to understand the pathobiology of corneal diseases, and to develop more sophisticated treatments. For this purpose, many Japanese cornea specialists have been abroad to the United States, the United Kingdom, etc., to perform collaborative works in basic and clinical cornea research. As a result, many original concepts and thoughts have been produced from Japan, and some of them are now accepted world wide. Further to promote the international exchange of current knowledge and research on corneas in both health and disease, the First Annual Meeting of the Kyoto Cornea Club was held in Kyoto City on December I and 2, 1995. The goal of this meeting was to provide each speaker's updated knowledge that would be of value to all active corneal researchers who are interested in 'state-of-the-art' information from Japan. To achieve this objective fully, 41 selected Japanese cornea specialists registered as active participants in this meeting. James D. Zieske, PhD, from Schepens Eye Research Institute and the Department of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA, and Tadatsugu Taniguchi, PhD, from the Department of Immunology, Faculty of Medicine, Tokyo University, Japan, participated as special guests at this meeting, and both gave plenary lectures. This volume was created to provide each speaker's current opinions on the subjects they presented at this meeting, and also to provide a scientific reference for cornea research. We hope that the first issue will serve as a useful source of current knowledge and insight on Japanese cornea research.
