Many people know that Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) was a French painter whose work and influence linked Post-Impressionism and Cubism. What, perhaps, they don't know is that he was best friends with French novelist Émile Zola until a disagreement ended their friendship of 34 years; that his work was rejected by the Salon and mainstream art schools before his unique style received critical acclaim; that he died from pneumonia after refusing to stop painting in a thunderstorm; and that, in 2011, his iconic artwork The Card Players was sold for more than $250 million. This book presents an instant impression of his life, work and fame, with an array of irresistible facts and figures converted into infographics to reveal the artist behind the pictures.

"Sometimes the beauty of light can last only an instant...be ready." - Laurie Goldstein-Warren, P119 It starts with a sparkle of light, the expressive way a shadow maps out a face, the almost other-worldly luminosity of roses on an overcast day. These are the moments, often brief and unexpected, that turn ordinary subjects into powerful inspiration, and--when handled with skill and originality--a painting into a masterpiece. The magical moments featured in Splash 14 evoke the very essence of watercolor--light and color. More than 120 brilliant paintings are accompanied by generous insights from the artists. Find out how they captured lyrical light effects, quiet moods, lively shadows, and incredibly subtleties or shouts of color. In keeping with the Splash tradition, this volume celebrates the heart, spirit and innovation of contemporary watercolor. It promises hours of enjoyment and intrigue for artists and art-enthusiasts alike. "A great painting is more often the result of an enjoyable journey than a planned process." - Janet Nunn, P110

About the Book A good painting is poetry for the eyes and Clarence P. Hornung serves up a feast for ocular enjoyment. Mr. Hornung was a preeminent respected graphic artist and author. His career legacy is well-documented. He has authored well over 40 books in the field of graphic arts, antique collectibles, transportation, font design, as well as Americana history. His design work for corporate clients included logos, advertising, assisted product design and marketing for well-known companies. Coca-Cola, Arrow Shirt, Longines, Seagrams, Encyclopedia Britannica, Quaker Oats, Disney, General Motors, and Atlantic Richfield are just a partial listing of some of the companies who commissioned his talent. While his recognized commercial talent and books have been applauded, his watercolors are less well-known. To relax and fulfill his other artistic inspiration, Mr. Hornung would travel and paint. These watercolors were initially intended for family and friends. 50 years ago he decided to collect 80 watercolors and display them in two art shows titled, “Around the World in 80 Watercolors.” This book compiled by his grandson attempts to re-create those shows as well as categorize, organize and include newer watercolors in addition to explaining his creative process and further document his creative talent and love of travel.
