Dr. Hans-Peter Schmid has addressed in this monograph the basic dilemmas surrounding prostate cancer. These dilemmas include the 40 % histologic incidence of invasive cancer in men in comparison to a 3 % death rate, the extraordinary slow doubling time of four to five years for untreated early clinical stages (T1 and T2 cancers), the limited life span of even healthy men over 70 years of age, and the national and international debates of how to treat this cancer. It is important, however, to recognize that despite these uncertainties, prostate cancer is probably the most predictive of all human solid tumors. Dr. Schmid has addressed the basis for much of this predictability in this monograph. The level of serum PSA and its rate of increase in the untreated patient with a prostate size of less than 50 grams is undoub tedly the most useful of all measurements in predicting volume and grade of the cancer, but it is closely followed by assessment of the extent and percent of grade 4 and 5 cancer in six systematic, spatially separated biopsies. Estimating the amount of suspected cancer on digital rectal examination by assigning a clinical stage is useful, but far less quantitative than PSA and systematic biopsies. Cette action est particuli rement int ressante en canc rologie tant sur le plan symptomatologique (naus es, anorexie, douleur) que curatif (action anti-tumorale). Ce travail fait la synth se de l' tat actuel des connaissances sur l'utilisation du cannabis et de ses d riv s dans le domaine du cancer.

La maladie cancereuse se caracterise par l'envahissement progressif de l'organe d'origine, puis de l'organisme entier, par des cellules devenues peu sensibles ou insensibles aux mecanismes d'homeostasie tissulaire et ayant acquis une capacite de proliferation indefinie (immortalisation). Les modifications phenotypiques subies par une cellule au cours du processus de transformation maligne sont le reflet de l'acquisition consecutive de modifications genetiques. A l'echelon moleculaire, le developpement d'un cancer correspond a l'accumulation progressive de mutations de genes au sein du noyau des cellules, l'activation d'oncogenes et l'inactivation de genes suppresseurs de tumeurs. De nombreuses alterations genetiques sont necessaires pour qu'un tissu normal devienne tumoral. La grande majorite de ces alterations sont somatiques. Seule une etape est germinale, et exclusivement dans les tumeurs hereditaires ( 10 % des cancers). L'identification des genes alteres dans les tumeurs permet de progresser dans la comprehension des mecanismes moleculaires de la carcinogenese et d'utiliser ces marqueurs genetiques en cancerologie clinique"

Le ph nom ne de r version de la r sistance du paludisme s'apparentant au ph nom ne observ chez les cellules canc reuses des mammif res, nous a permis de mener des investigations chez des souches de Plasmodium falciparum choloroquino-r sistantes.
