I satelliti hanno rivoluzionato la nostra vita senza che ce ne accorgessimo. I sistemi di navigazione satellitare delle nostre auto e dei nostri telefoni cellulari ci guidano in ogni parte del mondo e hanno permesso lo sviluppo di un’economia globalizzata dove la logistica traccia persino i nostri acquisti online passo dopo passo. I satelliti di osservazione della Terra sono i veri strumenti che ci permettono di capire come evolve il clima. La sicurezza dei nostri paesi dipende dalle comunicazioni spaziali e dalle immagini satellitari, come sta a dimostrare la guerra in Ucraina dove il conflitto tra Russia e Occidente si combatte anche in orbita. I satelliti connettono il mondo ma lo pervadono. L’economia spaziale che l’uomo sviluppa sfruttando i segnali satellitari avvantaggia tutti ma arricchisce pochi e se le possibilità che oggi lo Spazio sembra offrire all’umanità appaiono quasi infinite, la realtà è che la dimensione spaziale intorno alla Terra è limitata e dovrebbe essere una risorsa condivisa a disposizione di tutte le nazioni, un luogo eletto patrimonio dell’umanità. Non per un idealistico fanatismo ideologico ma per la sopravvivenza della nostra stessa specie. A nessuna azienda privata, per quanto ricca e finanziata da un governo, dovrebbe essere consentito di monopolizzare lo Spazio per creare un’economia terrestre a proprio vantaggio esclusivo alimentando persino nuovi rischi di emergenze ambientali. Però è proprio quello che sta accadendo oggi sopra le nostre teste distratte dalle concrete e reali difficoltà quotidiane. Come esposto nel libro, poche corporations private stanno plasmando la nuova economia dello spazio integrandola con nuove discipline e differenti settori di mercato: robotica, cibernetica, neuroscienza sono alcune dimensioni che si integrano nei business plan planetari dei nuovi imprenditori che si lanciano nella corsa allo Spazio per cambiare la Terra. Crisi economiche, sociali, ambientali e persino sanitarie stanno cambiando il pianeta e la tecnologia che sta guidando questo nuovo percorso sfugge al nostro controllo e resta nelle mani di pochi.
