Following the Second Vatican Council, when each Religious Institute was encouraged to research its charism, some Institutes experienced a tension between their charism and their mission, or even difficulty identifying what their charism was. This book is a study of the theological understanding of charism and of mission in relation to Religious Life within the Catholic Church. While this topic has featured in much Roman Catholic theological literature since Vatican II, there appears to be a dearth of in-depth studies. This book addresses this apparent lacuna. It draws particularly on the work of two major theologians, Jean-Marie Roger Tillard OP and Sandra Marie Schneiders IHM, who have reflected at length on charism and mission in the period leading up to Vatican II and on the implementation of its documents with respect to Religious Life. The very significant contributions of Tillard and Schneiders on the topic provide Religious, as well as others who want to know and understand Religious Life, with an interesting and motivating insight into charism and mission in Religious Life. Within the Roman Catholic Church, a “Year of Consecrated Life” has just drawn to a close, and this book forms a background and a response to Pope Francis’ Apostolic Letter to “all Consecrated People on the occasion of the Year of Consecrated Life” (November 2014), which invited Religious to reflect on these aspects that are essential to the life they have chosen to live.

O livro "Carisma e poder no discurso político" resulta de um sério engajamento acadêmico de Rudney Soares, durante o período de seu doutoramento em Língua Portuguesa na PUC-SP, quando investigou a ação política, particularmente, em discursos político-eleitorais midiatizados, com base no campo linguístico-discursivo. Embora feitas pequenas adequações, o livro não altera nem o percurso investigativo feito por Soares, nem a interpretação do corpus selecionado; assim, os resultados comprobatórios da tese levantada ficaram registrados aqui na obra que ele coloca a público. Carisma e poder no discurso político traz reflexões relevantes para os campos da Linguística e da Política, embora não escape ao autor mencionar outras disciplinas que abordam, também, o objeto política, sem esgotar esse fenômeno É necessário enfatizar, também, a coragem de Soares em colocar em análise discursos políticos, midiatizados e polêmicos, proferidos por Aécio Neves e Dilma Rousseff, no segundo turno das eleições presidenciais de 2014. Com isso, a investigação materializada revela que o discurso político dos presidenciáveis evidencia que o carisma aparece como traço constitutivo da identidade do sujeito político, situando-o entre a vontade de mudança do status quo e sua projeção como executor. De forma geral, o político brasileiro, num jogo de aparência e de sedução, busca legitimar seu poder na mídia e nas urnas, a fim de firmar seu carisma. Sem dúvida, a ideia de analisar os discursos de presidenciáveis revela aspecto relevante das competições partidárias e aponta o modo como o sujeito político utiliza em seu discurso uma máscara para esconder suas condições reais de existência.

Since 1943, the lives of Brazilian working people and their employers have been governed by the Consolidation of Labor Laws (CLT). Seen as the end of an exclusively repressive approach, the CLT was long hailed as one of the world's most advanced bodies of social legislation. In Drowning in Laws, John D. French examines the juridical origins of the CLT and the role it played in the cultural and political formation of the Brazilian working class. Focusing on the relatively open political era known as the Populist Republic of 1945 to 1964, French illustrates the glaring contrast between the generosity of the CLT's legal promises and the meager justice meted out in workplaces, government ministries, and labor courts. He argues that the law, from the outset, was more an ideal than a set of enforceable regulations--there was no intention on the part of leaders and bureaucrats to actually practice what was promised, yet workers seized on the CLT's utopian premises while attacking its systemic flaws. In the end, French says, the labor laws became "real" in the workplace only to the extent that workers struggled to turn the imaginary ideal into reality.
