En estas cartas, el poeta, además de exponer con una claridad y belleza sin igual sus opiniones sobre la creación artística, plasmó sabiamente sus ideas sobre la vida: el amor y la soledad, la muerte y la fecundidad, así como lo sobrenatural. «Kappus admiraba profundamente a Rainer Maria Rilke, que ya era una de las voces más poderosas de su tiempo. Rilke había estudiado en la misma academia militar que Kappus y, como él, había asistido a las clases del profesor Horaček, un hombre sabio y bondadoso que ejercía de capellán. Animado por esas circunstancias, el joven aprendiz de poeta se decidió a escribirle, pidiéndole respuestas o simples consejos. Rilke le contestó desde París el 17 de febrero de 1903, iniciando un intercambio epistolar que se prolongaría hasta el 26 de diciembre de 1908. Kappus nunca se desprendió de las diez cartas de Rilke, que aparecerían publicadas por primera vez en Leipzig en 1929, tres años después de la muerte del autor de El libro de horas».
