Excerpt from Catalogue de la Bibliotheque Wallonne, Deposee A Leide: Publie par Ordre de la Reunion de Middelbourg, en Aout 1854, A l'Usage des Eglises Wallonnes des Pays-Bas; Supplement 1855-1860 Voici, en consequence de la resolution, prise a la Reunion des Deputes de nos Eglises a Middelbonrg en Aout 1854, apres un intervalle de cinq annees le premier Supplement un Catalogue de la Bibliotheque Wallonne, publie en 1855. En publiant ce Supplement la Commission, chargee de sa surveillance n'a que fort peu de particularites a ajouter a ce qui a ete dit alors touchant l'origine, la fondation et le but de cette collection destinee a former un fonds de mate riaux pour l'histoire des Eglises Wallonnes des Pays - Bas. D'abord on verra que ce Supplement surpasse en etendue le Catalogue lui - meme; preuve evidente autant du secours mate riel que la Bibliotheque a eprouve et eprouve encore par les contributions annuelles des Eglises que du soin et des efforts que la Commission a pris pour sa conservation son entretien et son enrichissement. Outre divers dons qui lui sont parvenus successivement durant l'epoque, qui separe le Catalogue de son Supplement, soit de la part de leurs auteurs ou de leurs possesseurs soit du sein de nos Eglises ou d'autre part elle s'est empressee a ne negliger aucune occasion favo rable pour augmenter et completer la collection confiee a ses soins; en premier lieu et principalement par le moyen des ventes publiques, et ensuite par la voge ordinaire du com merce. Parmi les ventes tant soit peu notables, qui lui ont fourni l'occasion d'enrichir la collection, il suffira de nom mer celles des Bibliotheques de feu M. Le Pasteur Hollandais N. Berkhout a Leide, en 1856; de MM. Les Pasteurs van voonsr, pere et fils, a Amsterdam, en 1859 et s. Et de feu M. 6. W. Vm oosrsu na mum, a Haarlem, vers la fin d'avril de l'annee courante. Si des collections pareilles celles que nous venons de nommer, formees durant un os pace de temps assez considerable servent surtout a recueillir et a completer des curiosites litteraires d'autrefois qui de viennent de plus en plus rares et inconnues le commerce fournita ala continue tous les ouvrages recemment publies, que l'on pourrait desirer et comme cette voye reste on verte tous les jours on pourra sans cesse en profiter plus qu'on n'a fait jusqu'ici en comparaison de ce que les ventes ont fourni. Au reste si parmi les accessions survenues 'd la collection, depuis la publication 'de son Catalogue, il s'en trouve qui pourraient y paraitre plus au moins deplacees; comme quelques productions etrangeres et meme catholiques il importe d'observer qu'ayant obtenu la plupart de' des ara ticles en combinaison avec d'autres achats on n'a pas' au. Dialogues of Maximus and Themistius is the first English translation of Pierre Bayle’s last book, Entretiens de Maxime et de Thémiste, published posthumously in 1707. The two parts of the Dialogues offer Bayle’s final responses to Jean Le Clerc and Isaac Jaquelot, who had accused Bayle of supporting atheism through his writings on the problem of evil. The Dialogues defends Bayle’s thesis that the problem of evil cannot be solved by reason alone, but serves only to demonstrate the necessity of faith. In his Introduction to the Dialogues, Michael W. 'the oldest biography of Spinoza', La Vie de Mr. Spinosa, which in the manuscript copies is often followed by L'Esprit de M. Spinosa. Margaret Jacob, in her Radical Enlightenment, contended that the Traite was written by a radical group of Freemasons in The Hague in the early eighteenth century. Silvia Berti has offered evidence it was written by Jan Vroesen. Various discussions in the early eighteenth century consider many possi ble authors from the Renaissance onwards to whom the work might be attributed. The Trois imposteurs has attracted quite a bit of recent attention as one of the most significant irreligious clandestine writings available in the Enlightenment, which is most important for understanding the develop ment of religious scepticism, radical deism, and even atheism in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Scholars for the last couple of decades have been trying to assess when the work was actually written or compiled and by whom. In view of the widespread distribution of manu scripts of the work all over Europe, they have also been seeking to find out who was influenced by the work, and what it represented for its time. Hitherto unknown manuscripts are being turned up in public and private libraries all over Europe and the United States.
