Presence in Play: A Critique of Theories of Presence in the Theatre is the first comprehensive survey and analysis of theatrical presence to be published. Theatre as an art form has often been associated with notions of presence. The ‘live’ immediacy of the actor, the unmediated unfolding of dramatic action and the ‘energy’ generated through an actor-audience relationship are among the ideas frequently used to explain theatrical experience – and all are underpinned by some understanding of ‘presence.’ Precisely what is meant by presence in the theatre is part of what Presence in Play sets out to explain. While this work is rooted in twentieth century theatre and performance since modernism, the author draws on a range of historical and theoretical material. Encompassing ideas from semiotics and phenomenology, Presence in Play puts forward a framework for thinking about presence in theatre, enriched by poststructuralist theory, forcefully arguing in favour of ‘presence’ as a key concept for theatre studies today.

Summary, Analysis & Review of Amy Cuddy’s Presence by Instaread Preview: Have you ever bombed a job interview or fumbled an “elevator pitch”? Based on a number of social psychology studies, Presence is a book by Harvard Business School professor Amy Cuddy that encourages people to stop worrying about the impression they make on others and instead use simple tools like body language to change the way they feel about themselves. Presence shows how, by accessing one’s personal power, an individual can become bolder and more confident in challenging situations like job interviews, business pitches, or even relationship breakups. Achieving presence occurs when people stop focusing on what others think of them and instead focus on the changes they are making in themselves. While understanding this presence can certainly help in public speaking and presentations, someone with a presence that communicates quiet confidence might also be viewed as a better listener, which is a key attribute in any organization… PLEASE NOTE: This is a summary, analysis & review of the book and NOT the original book. Given the expansion of multimedia technology and proliferation of moving projections on the theatre stage in the 21st century, this thesis examines how a virtual or projected character can appear to be present without a physical body on the stage. This study is grounded in the theories of effet de présence (effect of presence) as elaborated by Josette Féral, but also uses other theories to look at how productions can create such an effect for virtual characters. Specifically, this thesis examines the character's relationship with the real, framing devices and actions of the characters. The specific examples of Rwanda 94 (Groupov), La Belle et la Bête (4D Art) and Les Aveugles (UBU CC) are used as case studies in order to focus on these techniques.

William Shakespeare's King Lear (printed in 1608) and John Webster's The Duchess of Malfi (performed in 1614) each feature important female characters who are killed offstage, creating what I argue is an absent presence that haunts each play. Through an investigation of the main female characters, Cordelia and the Duchess, I examine the idea of absent presence, arguing specifically that Shakespeare and Webster actually depict Cordelia and the Duchess through this concept--in other words, these writers paradoxically create an understanding of each character by what they do not show. In my thesis, I thus explore how Shakespeare and Webster represent Cordelia and the Duchess when they are not physically present. My analysis benefits from being contextualized within other Renaissance plays, Sir Philip Sidney's sonnet sequence Astrophil and Stella, and also adaptations. Mentioning later adaptations of these plays, such as Nahum Tate's on King Lear and Lewis Theobald's on The Duchess of Malfi, further helps support my claim that for Shakespeare and Webster, physical absences are necessary to their respective portrayals of their female leads. At stake in this paper is an enriched understanding of the way that Renaissance drama depicts female characters.

This book explores the theme of the missional conversion of the church, namely how the church is transformed toward its missionary vocation, from a biblical-theological perspective. The purpose of this book is to find biblically grounded, theologically sound, and practically applicable principles helpful for the church which seeks to be continuously shaped into a missional community which authentically and fully participates in God’s mission today. The biblical-theological findings on how the triune God in the biblical narrative shapes the people of God toward their missionary vocation demonstrates, first, that, in Scripture, the missional conversion of the church is primarily the consequence of its continuous encounter with the triune God, and, second, that this divine-human encounter for the missional conversion of the church is ineluctable in view of the ongoing tension between the missional faithfulness of God in fulfilling the missionary vocation of the church, on the one hand, and the missional failure of the church in its missionary vocation, on the other hand.

Materialities Of Passing written by Peter Bjerregaard and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-17 with Social Science categories.

‘Passing’ is a common euphemism for the death of a person, as he or she is said to ‘pass away’ or ‘pass on’. This open-ended saying has at its heart a notion of transformation from one state to another, which in turn grants the possibility of grasping or approximating the passage of time and the materiality of death and decay. This book begins with the idea that since all material things - whether animals, human beings, objects or buildings - undergo some form of passing, then the specific transformation in these passages and the materiality actively given to it can offer us a grasp of otherwise precarious temporalities. It examines how human beings strive to relate to the temporal dimension of death and decay, by giving new shape and direction to being and by examining its natural transformations. Focusing on the materiality of passing, and thereby the relationship between embodiment, temporality and death, Materialities of Passing offers rich case studies from Europe, Papua New Guinea, South Africa and the Russian Far East for exploring the material, spatial and directional aspects of the very interface between life and death. As such, it will appeal to scholars of anthropology, death studies, archaeology, philosophy and cultural studies.
