Louis Chardon (1595-1651) est l'un des plus grands ecrivains de la litterature. Exact contemporain de Descartes, il est egalement l'un des grands philosophes de son siecle. Purement accidentelle, sa rarete provient de la desinvolture avec laquelle le negligerent les clercs qui avaient la charge de son oeuvre. Entre a 23 ans chez les Dominicains, a Paris, Chardon traduisit sainte Catherine de Sienne, que la splendeur de son style eut le haut merite de faire connaitre en France. Homme de piete et de silence, il devint malgre lui le confesseur des personnalites les plus illustres. En 1647 paraissait son chef-d'oeuvre, La Croix de Jesus, dont le retentissement fut considerable. Le style en est si puissamment incomparable que l'on a pu dire qu'il etait plein d'une vibration ou la chair et le sang resonnent. Penseur magistral, l'intelligence majestueuse de Louis Chardon, son ame saine et sereine, son coeur heureux et noble, font de ce genie une abondante et resplendissante nature que rien ne menace jamais de retrecir. Il est le type meme de l'humaniste de grande allure. Un but: l'explication des epreuves de la condition humaine. Avec une robustesse protectrice et une elegance monumentale, Chardon plonge au plus noir des tenebres interieures et les dissipe lumineusement. Il marche sur les eaux. C'est un fait constant que l'ame humaine, pendant toute sa vie, se trouve dans la conviction exprimee par le Christ mourant sur la Croix: Mon Dieu, pourquoi m'as-tu abandonne ? Mais Dieu ne saurait abandonner une creature telle que l'homme, dont l'existence se tisse de n'aspirer qu'a son eternite. L'humanite vit ainsi dans la certitude d'un abandon, mais qui est impossible; et elle repand un desespoir inutile, qui est l'intime pretexte des pires crimes. Les hommes s'agitent et ne regardent pas l'unite qui fonde avec science le paradoxe de leur condition. En vertu du prejuge selon quoi leurs opinions ne sont pas des prejuges, ils prejugent de ne pas rechercher cette unite fondamentale dont la Croix de Jesus est le principe existentiel. C'est la que Chardon commence. Par-dela les croyances, il engage une methode objective: de cette unite de la Croix qu'appellent les faits, dire la joie d'une heureuse philosophie. C'est ce que dix ans plus tard Pascal essaiera. Chardon ecrit un livre que Pascal aurait voulu achever lui-meme. Cette oeuvre d'une force comparable a celle de saint Jean de la Croix, ce sublime poeme digne de Platon (A. Bremond) nous le rendons une fois pour toutes au bonheur des lecteurs. Le texte de notre edition est celui, definitif, etabli par Francois Florand. L'ouvrage est brillamment presente par Romain Deblue, docteur en philosophie (universites de Paris- Sorbonne et de Fribourg), specialiste de saint Thomas d'Aquin et de litterature religieuse, et dont l'importante oeuvre de romancier a recemment marque les esprits. Jusqu'ici n'existait sur l'auteur de La Croix de Jesus que le desormais centenaire defrichage jadis opere par le P. Florand. L'introduction que R.
