Can China’s economy overcome its excessive dependence on exports? The Chinese government and international observers argue that this is needed if growth is to be sustained in the future. But substantial growth of domestic consumption can only be achieved if China also steps beyond its reliance on cheap migrant labour. Florian Butollo approaches this issue by means of a thorough empirical investigation of the recent transformation of industries in the Pearl River Delta, China ́s largest industrial hub. He uncovers that industrial upgrading rarely supports improvements in the basic employment pattern in enterprises in the garment and LED lighting industry. This failure of "social upgrading” threatens to undermine the project of a rebalancing of the Chinese economy. The book shows that the implementation of collective labour rights remains an important precondition for the future of the Chinese growth model.

This expert-led analysis smartly examines the issues of posted workers in 12 European countries and the impact of the EU Posting Directive that was established in the 1990s to handle rules regarding workers rights. The cross-border provision of services with posted workers is an integral part of the economic freedoms in the European Union internal market. In the best case, this provision is a logical part of a genuine division of labor on a European scale between contractors and specialized subcontractors. In the worst case, the cross-border provision of services can be falsely used as a method to recruit cheap temporary labor. Providing special attention to the experiences of compliance authorities, labor inspectors, and other controlling bodies, this practical evaluation reveals that the use of the posting mechanism ranges from decent long-established partnerships between contracting partners to completely fake practices of labor-only recruitment. Originally published in 1982, this was the first in-depth study of the labour system of the South African gold mining industry during the crucial years 1886 to 1906. It provided an insight into the early period but was relevant for much longer, as many of the policies decided upon in the formative years of the industry persisted. The book traces the growth of deep-level mining and covers the conflicts between miners and mine-owners . It discusses the effects on the gold mining industry of the Anglo-Boer War, and the role of the mine-owners in that conflict. It also examines the role of Chinese labour as a strategy in the defence of the labour structure and finally discusses the origins of the racially discriminatory legislation which characterized the Apartheid system.

The distribution of food played a considerable yet largely unrecognized role in the economic history of Victorian and Edwardian Britain. In the midst of rapid urbanization and industrialization, retail competition intensified and the channels by which food made it to the market became vital to the country's economic success. Illustrating the pivotal importance of food distribution in Britain between 1830 and 1914, The Social Cost of Cheap Food argues that labour exploitation in the distribution system was the key to cheap food. Through an analysis of labour dynamics and institutional changes in the distributive sector, Sébastien Rioux demonstrates that economic development and the rising living standards of the working class were premised upon the growing insecurity and chronic poverty of street sellers, shop assistants, and small shopkeepers. Rioux reveals that food distribution, far from being a passive sphere of economic activity, provided a dynamic space for the reduction of food prices. Positing food distribution as a core element of social and economic development under capitalism, The Social Cost of Cheap Food reflects on the transformation of the labour market and its intricate connection to the history of food and society.
