This book examines the resources that speakers employ when building conversations. These resources contribute to overall coherence and cohesion, which speakers create and maintain interactively as they build on each other’s contributions. The study is cross-linguistic, drawing on parallel corpora of task-oriented dialogues between dyads of native speakers of English and Spanish. The framework of the investigation is the analysis of speech genres and their staging; the analysis shows that each stage in the dialogues exhibits different thematic, rhetorical, and cohesive relations. The main contributions of the book are: a corpus-based characterization of a spoken genre (task-oriented dialogue); the compilation of a body of analysis tools for generic analysis; application of English-based analyses to Spanish and comparison between the two languages; and a study of the characteristics of each generic stage in task-oriented dialogue.

In this book, Nobel Peace Prize winner and Maya activist Rigoberta Menchú Tum returns to the world of her childhood. The Honey Jar brings us the ancient stories her grandparents told her when she was a little girl, and we can imagine her listening to them by the fire at night. These Maya tales include creation myths, a classic story about the magic twins (which can also be found in the Popol Vuh), explanations of how and why certain natural phenomena came to exist, and animal tales. The underworld, the sky, the sun and moon, plants, people, animals, gods and demi-gods are all present in these stories, and through them we come to know more about the elements that shaped the Mayas’ understanding of the world. Rich and vibrant illustrations by noted Mazatec-Mexican artist Domi perfectly complement these magical Maya tales. The authors include coverage of the teacher's legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities in assessment; how to organise for summary assessment and formative assessment; how to understand standardised assessments; and how to communicate with parents. A special appendix helps teachers design assessments in all developmental domains and includes suggested behaviors to observe and charts to help teachers identify the next steps in learning and development. The 6th Edition has been revised and updated to reflect the rapidly developing concepts of appropriate assessment, expected educational outcomes, the way young children develop and learn, how the authentic assessment process relates to the use of formal state-mandated assessments, and the early childhood teacher's assessment responsibilities.

Science and literature have always been strange bedfellows. Like puzzle pieces, they fit because they're different. Some of the greatest works of world literature have been inspired by the marvels of the scientific world. Scientists have written works of the imagination. Even formal scientific writings have been known to employ rhetoric. There is a tendency to think of literature—and the humanities in general—as having little to do with science. Yet scholars have conducted fruitful studies of the history and philosophy of science. With the rise of technology, scholars have also applied scientific analysis to the study of literature and the creative process. The intersection of scientific and humanistic inquiry is finally being mapped. This volume includes more than 650 A-Z entries on topics and themes in science and literature, significant writers, key scientists, seminal works, and important theories and methodologies. This reference defines the rapidly emerging interdisciplinary field of literature and science. An introductory essay traces the history of the field, its growing reputation, and the current state of research. Broad in scope, the volume covers world literature from its beginnings to the present day and illuminates the role of science in literature and literary studies. A wide range of experts contributed entries to this volume, each of which concludes with a brief bibliography. The entire volume closes with a list of works for further reading.

Each day in the United States, 10,000 people become eligible to retire. For these individuals, and the thousands of others already retired, retirement issues loom large. Though visions of retirement for most start out as a joyous anticipation of being engaged in activities we did not have time for when working, re-engaging with friends and family, visiting new and exotic places and the like, these visions can be short-lived for many unprepared retirees. The primary reason? An episode with illness (such as a stroke, heart attack, cancer, or a diagnosis of Alzheimers, Parkinsons) can leave the whole family in chaos and render the ill person a huge burden on loved ones. Unplanned illness can lead to many undesirable outcomes, including: A forced and unwelcome move to an institutional care setting; Loss of assets to cover the high cost of care not covered by Medicare and other health insurance; and, A significant burden being placed on loved ones of the ill person. This reality is quite visible to aging Americans who harbor significant anxieties over these issues. For most, this will be the time when we will realize that Medicare does NOT cover long-term care needs in any meaningful fashion. All this leads to the fact that a bout with illness can quickly render traditional retirement planning ineffective in addressing the most critical retirement concerns aging Americans harbor; however, the good news is with proper planning these concerns can be addressed. So what is proper planning? It is coordinated and comprehensive planning around healthcare, housing, financial, and legal issues. It is planning that can help you: Avoid institutional care if that is at all possible; Locate the most appropriate housing alternative if aging at home is not possible Protect your assets not only from probate costs and estate taxes, but from uncovered long-term care and medical costs as well; and, Not become a burden on your loved ones in case of incapacity. The AgingOptions Guide is a primer on these issues and how to develop a plan to have a better retirement than might be possible.

This book presents a perspective on genre based on what it is that leads users of a language to recognise a communicative event as an instance of a particular genre. Key notions in this perspective are those of prototype, inheritance, and intertextuality; that is, the extent to which a text is typical of the particular genre, the qualities or properties that are inherited from other instances of the communicative event, and the ways in which a text is influenced by other texts of a similar kind. The texts which form the basis of this discussion are drawn from experimental research reporting in English. Contents: 1. Introduction 2. Approaches to genre 3. Genre and frames 4. A sample analysis: Writing up research 5. Summary and conclusions.
