City-regions are areas where the daily journeys for work, shopping and leisure frequently cross administrative boundaries. They are seen as engines of the national economy, but are also facing congestion and disparities. Thus, all over the world, governments attempt to increase problem-solving capacities in city-regions by institutional reform and a shift of functions. This book analyses the recent reforms and changes in the governance of city-regions in France, Germany and Italy. It covers themes such as the impact of austerity measures, territorial development, planning and state modernisation. The authors provide a systematic cross-country perspective on two levels, between six city-regions and between the national policy frameworks in these three countries. They use a solid comparative framework, which refers to the four dimensions functions, institutions and governance, ideas and space. The book is inspired by the second seminar in a cycle connected to the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the Politecnico di Milano. "Working with the Image Description Processing Prediction" was the motto of this meeting, aiming to point out the role of Visual Language not only in describing reality, but also in supporting the thinking processes in Science (prediction), in Art (invention), in Technical studies (prevision) and in identifying and working on both visible and invisible phenomena. As John Barrow states, "So often a picture is better than a thousand words" and "The visual language is the most natural, while the other language could reasonably be considered as 'postscripts' to the human story". The essays included in the volume (from lectures, the poster session, interviews and round table) will show the wide range of technical possibilities connected with the present use of the Image, especially thanks to Computer Graphics, from 3D Modeling to Augmented Reality, while also offering a glimpse of interesting theoretical perspectives. In the end, as noted by Martin Heidegger, the word "theory" not only comes from the Ancient Greek verb "theoreo", that is "to see, to observe", but it also echoes the words "theos" and "thea", namely "god" and "goddess", and above all, it shares the root with the term "aletheia", which is the "truth", which is not far from the ultimate goal of research.

Is the outcome of interdisciplinary and interinstitutional collaborative research carried out by the Alliance of Universities for Regional Urban Development with Equity, constituted by the Universidad Autónoma de Occidente, Universidad ICESI, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana-Cali, Universidad de San Buenaventura-Cali, and Universidad del Valle. The Ford Foundation endorsed this alliance between the universities of the region to provide scientific and technical support to social inclusion projects aimed at generating equity. The financial resources provided by the Ford Foundation and the time allocated by the professors and researchers of the Universidad Autónoma, Universidad ICESI, Universidad de San Buenaventura-Cali and Universidad del Valle made this research and its publication in a book possible. This book discusses different theoretical guidelines used in the definition of a region, considered useful as analytical references for the empirical proposal in this book about the 28 municipalities in northern Cauca and southern Valle. Its six chapters describe the patterns of territory occupation, the socio-demographic characterization of the municipalities of the extended city-region, the region's economic structure components, the labor market imbalances, the analysis of the political-electoral heterogeneity of the urban agglomeration of Cali, and some conclusions and policy recommendations. Hence, based on a conceptual and methodological model, the empirical analysis furthered in this book indicates that Cali, as the main urban center, should include in its development plans and territorial planning more effective measures to know, assess, and plan—together with the neighboring municipalities, not only those of the department of Valle itself but those of the urban-rural periphery or hinterland of the southwest, which includes the municipalities of southern Valle and northern Cauca—, albeit through less asymmetrical relations and more shared associations to face a set of common problems that affect the entire region whose epicenter is Cali.

This book critically explores the interconnections between tourism and the contemporary city from a policy-oriented standpoint, combining tourism perspectives with discussion of urban models, issues, and challenges.
