Excerpt from City of San Diego and San Diego County, Vol. 1: The Birthplace of California When the writer started to prepare this History of San Diego County, it was with the hope that no preface would be necessary. Yet, as the work of gathering the necessary facts and preparing them for print progressed, the need for a few preliminary remarks became evident. An important reason for this lies in the fact that the writer could not have a longer time than was allotted to him to complete his manuscript. It would have been a pleasant task, for instance, to go more deeply into the rich stories of reminiscence which have been collected about San Diego, whose olden days are full of romantic appeal. It was impossible, however, within the limits of time and scope that had been laid down, to do more than select from these a few stories which seemed to be most important or distinctive or typical. The task was taken up and completed in full realization that the earlier periods of San Diego's history had been very ably covered in other histories, notably in that completed nearly fifteen years ago by William E. Smythe, then a resident of San Diego. It would be next to impossible for anyone to prepare a history of this city and county without giving much' consideration to Mr. Smythe's history. He did excellent work in collecting facts, some of them from rapidly dwindling sources, and he wrote those facts into a book of real merit. Long life is a characteristic of the Lawrence family, since the grandfather of George Washington Lawrence attained the age of a hundred three. Mr. Lawrence was a young man when he came to San Diego County and for many years he was active in his business as a farmer and miner in California and Arizona. His life has been in the open, and he has ridden horseback and walked over uncounted miles of the Southwest. Mr. Lawrence recalls a time when snow lay in the Imperial Valley, and he crossed the Colorado River dry shod. He now makes his home with Wilbur Grigsby, having a competence that enables him to live easily, though he occasionally does a day's work. He is still fond of horseback riding, and while always welcome at the home of his children he prefers Campo. His four children are R. H. of Fallbrook, Emmett of Fresno, Elvina and Lucy Ellen. John Seddon, manager and proprietor of the Diamond Realty Company at San Diego, has long been known as one of the most interesting characters of Southern California. He has been a man of the world, a traveler, soldier, horseman and business man, and he still owns ranches and breeds fine horses, an enterprise for which he is perhaps best known in California. He is an expert in every branch of horsemanship and for two years was a prominent figure in the moving industry at Hollywood. Mr. Seddon was born at Portree, Scotland, July 24, 1855, son of John and Alice (Brockbank) Seddon, natives of Scotland, where they always lived. The Seddon family ancestry runs back to 1725, while the Brockbanks goes into the sixteen hundreds. The Seddons comprise a mixture of Belgian, Scotch and Irish blood, while the Brockbanks were Lowland Scotch and Midlothians. John Seddon was born on a farm, ..
